~-T-~
Where am I? you looked around at your surroundings. All you could see was stone and ivy. Nothing else. But somehow, you knew where you were, what you were doing. You felt like there were pieces missing from your memory, but you knew you had a task: to rescue the test subjects from the Maze.
Oh, so I'm in a Maze, you thought to yourself. You heard heavy footsteps from down the long corridor you were in. Was that a subject? You stood up and brushed yourself off, ready to introduce yourself to the person, but he only looked at you confused.
"Are you a test subject?" you asked out loud once he was close enough to see you clearly. But the boy didn't say anything.
He was very dirty, like he hadn't showered in a week, and he was also sweaty, like he'd been running for most of the day.
"Who are you?" he asked, but he didn't get any closer to you. He looked very familiar, and you knew you would have recognized this boy if it weren't for the thick layer of dirt and grime covering him. Also, if you knew you hadn't been wiped of part of your memory.
You knew some things, though. You worked for a company called WICKED to try to find a cure for a virus called the Flare. You knew your name was Y/N. You knew about everything that happened to the world a few years before you were born. You knew a lot of things. You also knew why you were there, in that Maze, but that's all you could remember about it. You didn't know why you were rescuing the test subjects, or even who they were for that matter. You didn't know why they even needed rescuing. You were just here to do your job.
"I'm Y/N," you said. "Are you a test subject?" you repeated.
"So this is a test..." the boy mumbled under his breath. You still heard him, but you chose not to acknowledge it.
"Are there others?" you asked.
The boy looked at you and nodded. "You know, if you were someone else, I'd tell you to go the hell back to where you came from and let us leave ourselves, but I know you."
"What do you mean?" you raised an eyebrow, confused.
"You don't recognize me, Y/N?" the boy looked hurt, but then a look of realization washed over him. "They wiped your memory too?"
"Only some parts of it. But that doesn't bother me. It was so I could get my job done without interference. I know that."
"It doesn't bother you that your memory was wiped?" he asks, dumbfounded. I shake my head.
"No. It was for a good cause."
"And what would that be?"
"I get the feeling I'm not supposed to tell you. Come on," I changed the subjects. "Bring me back to the other subjects so I can get you all out of here."
"You can't do it tonight because the Doors will close in about an hour, but follow me," he said and turned around. "Oh, and don't call them subjects. It'll freak them out. Call them Gladers."
--
The next day, you were able to get the Gladers out of the Maze Trials successfully. Most of them, except one by the name of Gally, trusted you and let you lead them out. For some reason, you knew exactly how to get out of the Maze even though you'd never been there before and couldn't remember ever seeing it in you life. You used a code on a device you were given to shut the Grievers down and got you all out.
The hard part was trying to figure out why the boy you'd met last night, Thomas, kept clinging to you. He didn't say much after he realized you really didn't recognize him, but he still clung.
"Y/N!" He called when he was being taken into the van. He was being dragged by one of the guards for WICKED, but he didn't know that. He thought you were going to be "killed" like everyone else that was there. None of WICKED was going to be killed at that point, though. Little did he know, the trials had only just begun and he'd have to go through a little more until he was finished and had complete control over himself.
Most of your memories had come back, except for the memories before Thomas went up to the Maze. You couldn't remember a single thing about him, but he claimed he knew you. He shouldn't have been able to, though. He should have no recollection of anything before the Box. Maybe it was just hallucinations, because you didn't know him at all.
--
The next morning, the Gladers arrived back at the main compound, although they thought it was an anti-WICKED compound. It definitely wasn't. Most of WICKED had arrived back there, too, except for around ten who stayed behind to finish collecting information from both groups A and B. Then they would turn the Maze off and come back to the compound to work on the Scorch Trials.
You still had no memory of Thomas before you met him the other night. But the moment he saw you, he came up to give you a big hug. You weren't uncomfortable like you should have been, but you couldn't figure out why.
After the small reunion and him realizing you weren't in fact dead, he lead you to a small room: the bathroom for the boys. You kind of felt bad for him, because the next morning he'd be back to being a subject and not being as free as he thought he was. But you couldn't say anything. You were instructed by Chancellor Paige to keep your distance as much as possible so you wouldn't spill anything.
"You were my girlfriend, Y/N," Thomas said once he locked the bathroom door. You raised an eyebrow, wondering why he'd say such a thing.
When he didn't explain, you said, "What?"
"We dated before I went up to the Maze. I remember you so well, Y/N," he said. He looked like he was going to cry.
"I don't re-"
Before you could finish your sentence, his lips were on yours and your eyes went wide. Why was this boy kissing you? You worked for the place that tried killing him and will try killing him again in the future to find a cure for a brain-devouring disease. Didn't he realize that.
"Kiss me back, Y/N," Thomas pulled away and whined, staring at you with red eyes. "You need to remember."
You knew it wasn't going to work, but you leaned in to kiss him anyway. And what you felt was amazing.
You remembered. Everything from crying into his shirt before he went into surgery to get his memory wiped to the day you first met him so many years ago as children. The two of you were roughly the same age, and you'd become best friends right away. Why did he remember all of that, though? His memory was supposed to be completely gone.
You continued kissing him and memories continued flooding back to you. The one that stood out the most, though, was the night he told you he loved you for the first time.
