Harry's court date drew near and on the day of, Alex's father took him in to the ministry on his way to work. Alex didn't see him, and stayed holed up in her room. She heard a little commotion but didn't investigate. Eventually Hermione told her he was cleared.

The booklists and letters didn't come until the end of the August, leaving them only a week to get their books. Alex, Hermione and Ginny opened their letters together. Hermione let out a squeal, as she pulled out a badge.
"I'm a prefect!" She said.

"I feel sorry for the Gryffindors." Alex said. Hermione shot her a sour look. "I'm joking. I'm proud of you, H. It's awesome news."

"Thanks." Hermione noticed Alex's dismayed face. "Uh oh. What is it?"

"I got one too." She held up her prefect badge. Hermione's eyes lit up. "No. Whatever you're thinking, no."

"But Alex, it could be fun! Imagine, you and me. Prefects."

"I'm sending it back. I can hardly look after me, forget students." Alex said. "Besides, I'm in no mind to be a prefect."

"Alex, you'd be a great prefect." Ginny spoke up.

"Yeah, no one knows Hogwarts better than you." Hermione added.

"And you're really responsible and really clever. And there's the thing with the unicorns."

"I'm hardly responsible." Alex said. "Hermione will tell you."

"I mean, you can be responsible." Hermione shrugged. "Sometimes."

"Besides, with Cedric gone, I'm not really sure I'll be available enough for the new kids. It wouldn't be fair if I said yes and couldn't do the job." Hermione nodded.

"Okay."

"But you get to tell mum." Ginny smirked.

"I'd break her heart." Alex bit her lip. "Do we have to tell her?"

"Yep." Hermione said.

"Why don't you go see if there's another prefect?" Alex nudged and Hermione jumped up and ran out.

"I still think you'd be a really cool prefect."

"Still a no, Gin."

"But you could take away points from annoying people."

"I'll just ask Hermione."

"You could threaten Malfoy with points."

"He'll probably be the Slytherin prefect."

"Well that sucks."

"Besides, I don't need to be a prefect to keep Draco in line."

"Right, because you're friends." She scowled.

"Draco is a complicated fellow. He's not bad. He's definitely not innocent, but he's not bad."

"Spare me." Ginny grimaced. Alex grinned.

"I guess things might probably have to be different now." She shrugged. She heard her mother squeal across from the boys room. "So Ron's a prefect."

"Wanna go check it out?"

"No, I'm going to pretend to sleep for when mum comes in." Ginny laughed and left the room. Alex pulled out parchment and her inkpot and quill. She began drafting a letter to Professor Sprout. She'd probably only offered the position to Alex out of pity. Alex had leaned a lot more towards Snape than Sprout during her entire academic life. It really wasn't until she'd begun holing herself out in the herbology gardens, planting the seeds Draco and Blaise got her to keep her mind off Cedric that Sprout got the chance to get to know her student. It was rather sad actually, that Alex wasn't very close to her own head of house. Not until Sprout began helping her and letting her take solace in the greenhouses and gardens.

"Is it true?" Fred and George apparated into her room. She glared at them.

"Is what true?"

"You're a prefect too?"

"No." She said, very clearly holding the yellow and black one.

"You're holding the badge." They said at the same time.

"Well, technically, I'm not. I was offered, but I'm declining."

"Thatagirl." Fred said.

"Knew you weren't a total tosser."

"I could ask Hermione to dock points, you know. Perks of having a best friend for a prefect. All of the power, none of the responsibility." They rolled their eyes and disapparated leaving her in peace.

Molly did eventually come to see her daughter. Alex glanced sheepishly at her mother.
"I hear congratulations are in order."

"I'm not accepting." Alex told her mother.

"Well, why not?"

"I don't want to be a prefect."

"Why?"

"Because... I just don't." Alex crossed her arms. Molly walked over and sat on the edge of her bed.

"Alex? Talk to me."

"I just don't want to be prefect." She straightened up. "Besides, I'm trying out for quidditch this year, and I'm just not sure I'll have the time."

"What? But you hate quidditch."

"Things change." She shrugged. "I mean, how many things about me have changed over the years?"

"This is about Cedric, isn't it?"

"It's about me." She said. "I want to try out for the quidditch team."

"Why?"

"I'm also dropping arithmancy."

"Alexandra-"

"I hate that. You know I hate that." Alex jumped up. "And I don't want to be a prefect, or do arithmancy or talk about Cedric. You didn't even like the fact that I was going out with him. You just don't want anything to change. You want us to be stuck in our same old traditions with the same old children you know, but we're growing up mum. We're changing everyday. You treat Ginny like she's ten sometimes when she's almost fourteen, and you think the twins' goals and dreams is just a phase and you've thought that since they got into pranking and sometimes you forget I'm not the same person I was five years ago. I've grown. I know the hideous family secrets. I've known loss. Twice, in fact. Except this time it's not a misunderstanding. I won't get him back. Every time I close my eyes, I am terrified I'm going to lose someone else. I'm scared you're going to die and it'll be permanent this time. Or that it'll be Hermione or Ginny or dad or the boys. So don't treat me like the child you lost. I'm a different person, shaped by different experiences. I don't want to be a prefect, because how am I suppose to reassure the new kids that everything's going to be okay? Everything's just a misery to me, so how can I lie to them and tell them everything's fine?"

"Alex, sit down." Molly told her and Alex did as asked. "Maybe it's time you started seeing Miss Young again? Maybe she can help you?"

"The only thing that can help me is Voldemort dying and staying dead." Alex said. "Which means until Snape can find out how he came back and tells Dumbledore, we're dead in the water."

"Just think about it? I know it's hard, and I know the thought doesn't really appeal to you, but give it another try."

"No."

A/N- Alex is in so much painnnn. I feel so sorry for her. And so does Molly, as you might probably be able to tell by her not scolding Alex for yelling at her.

Favourite line is "I can hardly look after me, forget students." Lmfao, Alex is actually me, ngl. That line is just pure me 😂
