CRUNCHING OF SNOW had been all Roland heard for the past few minutes. Boots becoming heavier and heavier with each step he took. Pants belonging to him and Matt adding with the sound of their heavy jogging, but as well with the sound of walkers following. Their growls causing the hairs on the back of their necks to stand up on end. Not daring to stop just for a moment to look over his shoulder to see if the walkers were closer then their minds may have fooled them. Roland had been the one directing Matt on where they had to go to hunker down and he knew just how far it was.
He and Emily had passed the building and area today that was only a few minutes back. But was taking a lot longer with the few breaks to catch his and Matt's breath. No words had been spoken since they had left the town, and Roland wasn't planning on sharing any until Matt followed through on his promise of the location that had Emily. But even if he wanted to speak, there was nothing that he could say besides the fact that he failed Emily.
Emily had been at the back of Roland's mind but occasionally came to thought as he wondered if she was okay or hurt. Now that he found himself in this situation of being hellbent on putting his main mission aside and trying to find her. It spoke volumes to Roland and it honestly scared him. Even though she had been a slight drama queen with not being able to help clear houses, Roland was enjoying her company and he definitely was regretting not teaching her now.
He just didn't want to be the reason for her death or being bitten. That was the last thing he needed on his mind since he still held the guilt of Amy dying and many others. Another person added to that is far too many for Roland to count. No way could he hold the weight of having Emily's blood on his hands because of his fuck ups that were adding on every day. The hunting they did a week ago was because he knew she deserved knowing since if they ever got split up or he died, she had a chance to survive. She would be on her own and he knew that's tough even on the hardest souls, look at him. Being alone out here had turned him into the worst possible version of him that never questioned what he did and just acted off of fight or flight.
Matt's voice cut through the air as he winced from his chest tightening, begging for air. "How far?" He questioned and Roland scanned the surrounding area. Slowly piecing together the minor details and seeing that the building wasn't that far ahead up the road. "There," he pointed at the old factory building up the road. "That's the spot." Matt nodded and quickened their pace with a helping arm around Roland's waist.
