ROLAND HADN'T SLEPT since he got back with Shane. He'd stayed with his brother the entire night since Carl got through the surgery. To say Roland was relieved was an absolute understatement. It just made him feel a bit okay with the decision he had to make the prior hours ago. But didn't save him from the images of Otis flickering in his mind.

But in Roland's mind, he saved Otis from the inevitable. Even if it was cold-hearted, Roland did it for the overarching reason which was to save Carl. And it wasn't like Roland didn't feel like shit, any chance he could, he'd give Patricia a hug of comfort. The emotions she was feeling not different from the ones he'd experienced.

It was late in the night and Roland stared at his brother's frail, pale body and rubbed his eyes. Trying to stay awake and hopefully be the first person Carl saw. Except, that moment never came and to say Roland was disappointed was the right word. He knew that it would take longer for Carl to wake up, but he was allowed to wish, right?

A knock alerted him but easing back into his seat seeing it was Beth. "Hey." He yawned and the girl smiled lightly as she stepped forward. "You haven't eaten since you got back. I made you a sandwich." Roland looked at the food and shook his head, rubbing his eyes. "I'm okay, Beth. Thank you though." He said kindly, waiting for the girl to walk away, but it never happened.

Looking up at the girl, he found her in tears and about to start sobbing. He acted quickly by taking the plate from her and placing it down on the bedside table. "Hey, hey, hey. It's okay." Roland whispered as he hugged the girl awkwardly. Feeling her hands grab hold of the fabric of his shirt tightly. Beth placed her forehead against his shoulder as she cried into his shirt.

Roland didn't say a word, he just listened to Beth cry. Maybe he was thinking too much, but a slight sting of pain spread through his body as he heard the girl cry. It physically hurt him hearing the girl cry and it only made it worse when she pulled away and stared up at him. Roland felt his heart clench at seeing tears stream down the girl's cheeks.

He didn't even realize what he was doing but he cupped her face softly and brushed the tears away. Staring deep into her intense blue eyes that drew him in immediately. "What's wrong?" He mused softly, trying to be as comforting as possible. The girl swallowed the lump in her throat, letting out a sigh as she stared down at his chest. "How did Otis die?"
