Mabel's POV

"Goodnight, Mabel."

"Mhm! Goodnight!" I flip onto my side and shut my eyes hoping to go to sleep instantly, but it didn't work.

"...dad?" I roll over to look at him at the chair of the desk, reading a book, "hm? Yeah?"

"Why does dad work all the time..?" He smiles lightly and sigh, "it's how we get money, Mabel."

"But you work too, don't you?" He nods, "yes. But I do my job because of the occupation. Not for the money. If I did care about the money, I probably wouldn't have worked where I am. Or in that case, I wouldn't have been here."

"...can you tell me about you and dad? How did you meet?" After I met Mason today, I realized...I don't know anything about my parents at all..

He shuts his book and chuckles, "I was running to school and ran into him." I sit up and laugh, "you ran into him?" He nods, "yeah."

"Uhm- how old were you?"

"We were fourteen."

"You guys were so young!" He chuckles, "we aren't that old, dear. We're only 28." I laugh as I lay back down, facing the other way, away from dad.

"...you guys said that you two didn't always...get along..what happened?" Him and I sit in silence before I hear him sigh, "do you remember when I became your new teacher, Mabel?"

"Mhm..not a lot of people liked you at first.." he chuckles, "well, that day was the first time I seen your dad after 10 years."

"Ten years?!"

"Yep. Ten years.."

"So...what happened..? Why didn't you see each other for ten years?"

"When we were fourteen, he had to move. Your dad wasn't always great with communication, even then, so he decided.." he got quiet for a moment, "your dad and I were together then. So when he moved, he decided to leave me too."

"What!?" He chuckles, "that's so bad! Why would he do that?"

"No, no, don't blame your dad for this. It was kind of for the best, anyway. When I lived here, Tokyo, we only got to see each other once a week."

"...so you just didn't see each other for ten years..? No connection?"

"Yeah...we like to call you our little sunshine because you were the one who made us wake up to finally talk to each other again."

I may know this now..but it only led me to more questions. ECK! MY BRAIN CANT HANDLE THIS!

"What about grandma..? I know a lot about dad's mom..but not yours.." it got insanely quiet. You hear the front door open and close from downstairs, "I'm home!"

"That's a story for another day, love." He stand up, ruffling my hair, "goodnight."

"...goodnight." He walks out the room.

Grandmother...is it a bad subject?

Daichi's POV

-later-

"Are you okay?" Kōushi looks over his shoulder at me and smiles lightly, "yeah, I'm okay.." I put on a comfortable shirt before turning off the light to lay down. He gets under the covers and I pull him closer to me, "are you lying?"

"...Mabel asked about my mom tonight.." I rest my chin on top of his head, "mhm.."

"I don't know what to tell her.." I let out a breath, "your mom wasn't a good person...that's all you have to tell her.."

"Yeah, I know..." I pick him up to turn him around to face me, causing him to giggle, "our wedding anniversary is in a couple days, you can't be sad!" He smiles, "I'm not sad." I cup his face, "don't worry too much about it, okay?"

"It's only going to get worst when she gets older.." I sigh and pull him closer, "yeah, when she gets older. You don't have to answer her right now. She can wait. She almost has enough patience as you and she's eight."

"Okay..." I cup his face again and leave a small kiss, "goodnight, sugar."

"Goodnight.."

"I'm going to be late for school!!!" Mabel shouts, racing down the stairs.

"Your lunch is on the table next to the door!" Kōu shouts at here as she almost races out the door, "right! Thank you! See you after school!" She shuts the door and we see her race past the window quickly.

"Here's your lunch." He says, wrapping the bento up and handing it to me, "you're not going to have lunch with me today?"

"I have the lunch shift today." I nod, "oh, okay." He wraps up his own and grabs his bag before putting on his shoes, "let's go, we don't want you to be late."

We pull up into a parking spot and I stop the car, "okay, I love you, I'll see you-"

"Hey, don't go to work if something's bothering you." He looks over at me and smiles, "I'm okay!"

"You act like I haven't been married to you for years, Kou." He bites his lower lip and sit back in his seat, sighing. He started to turn his ring around his finger, a nervous habit, "why do I have anxiety..?" He giggles to lighten the mood but his face read anxious, "for work?" He shakes his head, "no...i don't know.." He sighs and smiles largely, seeming to be fake, "I'll be okay! It's late. I need to get inside." He picks up his bag, tossing it over his shoulder. He looks at me and smiles before giving me a small kiss, "I love you, I'll see you after work."

"Yeah, I love you too." He gives another weak smile before shutting the car door.

I realized as he was walking in he kept twisting the ring on his finger along with shaking his hands.

What are you so nervous about..?

Mabel's POV

Grandmother...grandmother...grandmother...

where are you?

I start quietly singing a song I made up, "♪grandmother, grandmother, where have you gone? Grandmother, grandmother, why won't dad talk about you? Grandmother grandmother, are you dead-?♪"

"Hm?" I look up from the ground to see Mason walking next to me, "o-oh! Eh...sorry."

"No worries...your voice is..pretty." I smile and start to walk slower, "thank you! We're going to be late for school, let's go!"

Maybe dad will tell me about Mr. Sawamura's (?) mother..

it's weird calling Mr. Sugawara 'sawamura...'

hm...

pops..no that makes him sound like an old man.

daddy...no, I'm not five...

Papa?

Papa?

hm...

Dad...and papa...

I like it.
