"Hey mom, you were a werewolf once, right?" I asked as we sat down to eat dinner. Mashed potatoes and steak sounded really good right now. My mom smiled and nodded. "Oh yes. I have to say that was the best time of my life right there." She looked off into space for a few moments then continued with her mashed potatoes. I nodded. "Right."
One thing I couldn't understand is how my mother could think that this was an enjoyable experience. I don't even see the point of becoming werewolves. Or at least a logical one.
Questions started swarming my mind. The more I thought about it, the more I realized that I didn't know much about my mom's era of wolves. As a matter of fact, I haven't asked my mom any questions about being one.
"Mom, how long were you a werewolf?" I finally couldn't hold it in anymore. She thought about this for a moment, mentally counting each year in her head. "Mm...ten years? No, nine...no it's ten." She stuttered, then nodded her head as if to clarify that ten was her final answer. "Oh, so...when did you first phase?" I asked as I stuffed another piece of steak in my mouth. "I remember that perfectly." My mother's mind wondered back to that time.
"Yes, I was in the sixth grade. I was actually at a friend's house spending the night. Then, we all went outside to play some truth or dare outside. We thought it may be a bit funner then just playing it in Bee's room. You know Bianca, right?" Oh, do I know Bianca.
Let's just say she was a very loud and outgoing person. Dark skin, gorgeous, but her personality...yeah, not so much. She was one of my mom's best friends through school. I don't know what ever happened there. Maybe my mom finally realized how bad of a person she was and how obnoxious and rude she can be. I rolled my eyes then nodded my head. "Yeah, go on."
"Well, that's pretty much it. I got dared to jump into Bianca's pool, fully dressed, and swim five laps. When I got out, Bianca's mother got furious with me and that's when I just blew. I couldn't control myself. Just the feeling of the tremors down my spine and then the whole morphing part." My mom shuddered.
"Wow, sixth grade? I cant even survive it now! Did anyone see you phase?" This question made my mom a bit uncomfortable, I could tell. She started playing with her food, which my mom never does, and her tongue kept poking at her cheeks, as if she was a bit agitated.
"No, because when Bianca's mom came out, all the girls ran back inside. They didn't want to get in trouble. And I phased after Bianca's mom turned around and started going inside. Since her house was enclosed by a tall fence though, it was a bit tricky to get out. Of course I didn't know what had happened to me either so...I mean, it's all just a memory now. But I do occasionally miss the feeling of being a dog. Things were so much easier. Well, if you didn't have the whole pack's thoughts running through your head at the same time that is." She smiled and winked at me.
"So, who was your alpha?" I asked, thinking about Aidan. "Our alpha was, you probably wont know him, but his name was George Pheonix." My eyes got wide. I knew George Pheonix better than my mom could think. "Are you serious? He's my fifth period writing teacher! Maybe that's why he usually makes us write about myths and legends and such." Mom laughed. "Yeah, I could see George doing that." She agreed.
We ate the rest of the time in mostly silence. Until my brother came home that is. "Hey, I'm home!" Bud yelled as he swung open the door. His football bag and gear all landed on the ground with a thud and he jumped onto the couch. "Where's the remote?" He snapped his fingers impatiently. My mom gave him an annoyed look. "It's right there on the coffee table Bud!" I answered his question in probably the same tone my mom would have used.
"Oh! Yeah, thanks lil' sis!" I rolled my eyes. I hated it when he called me that. "Bud you better pick up all of your football stuff before I throw it all out. And please wash them too. They stink." Bud just rolled his eyes. "Okay, I'll do it...tomorrow." The TV turned on from behind me and I heard the different channels go by. News, talk shows, late night comedies, soap operas, and finally the sports channel. Then I heard it stop there.
