FONTAINE MANOR
Christmas was a subdued affair, something that would have felt incredibly lonely in the giant old house if it was just Sage and the staff that stayed in town for the holidays.
But that year, for the first time since Julien Fontaine had died, the house was populated by people who loved each other. Maybe it wasn't as full as it had been in years past, when the entirety of the Fontaine family, from Madeliene Fontaine, her husband, her eldest son, Dante, his husband, and Sage's own father and mother, Andre and Adele, as well as Julien himself, lived in this place. Those days were ages ago, almost before she could remember.
It had been too long since all of them were here and happy. Now it was just Sage, and even the ghosts of those happy memories and people were seldom to be found in the halls of Fontaine Manor.
"Oi. Sage."
Lily's strong voice broke her out of her thoughts, and she turned her head from the window to find the redhead standing just inside the room with Madeleine in her arms, hip jutted out to rest against the wall.
With a smile, Lily began to speak once more. "Sirius is here. Nearly gave Noah a heart attack when he Apparated in—poor muggle bloke still hasn't grown used to magic, even when his wife's a brilliant witch." She said humorously, sending a wink Sage's way.
Sage stood up from where she had been perched on the window seat. "Practicing for motherhood, aye?" She said, gesturing to the baby in her best friend's arms.
"It's not like I've got any other babies in the family." Lily said, flustered. "Besides, Anna-Lee's working on Christmas dinner, so I figured I'd get some time with Madeleine so her mum can get a break."
"How kind of you."
Sirius's reaction to seeing his girlfriend after a while apart was the same as it always was; hugging her tightly and holding her securely to him, and laughing when she went uncharacteristically red.
He kept his arm around her shoulders, even after she'd pulled away from the hug, and followed obediently when she led him deeper into the house, into the kitchen, where Anna-Lee stood in front of the stove, Lily and James sat at the table, and Noah leaned against the countertop.
"Hello, Anna-Lee, Noah. Happy Christmas." Sirius said kindly, and he hugged the new mother and shook hands with her husband.
Anna-Lee smiled warmly. "Merry Christmas, Sirius. Glad you could make it." She replied.
Sirius surveyed the group before him. "Oi, where's the rest of us? Y'know, Remus, Maia, Charlotte, Marlene, Rowan, Peter?" He asked.
"Oh, Remus and Maia are with Maia's family in Scotland, Char and Marlene are off somewhere in Greece, probably wasted. Rowan said she wanted to spend Christmas alone, and Peter never answered when I texted and called him to invite him." Sage answered, leaning her head on her boyfriend's shoulder and pulling her cardigan tighter around her.
Furrowing his eyebrows, he frowned. "Damn. Would've liked to spend the holidays with them." He sighed and kissed her on the forehead. "At least I get to spend Christmas with my lady and a few of our friends."
She burrowed her face deeper into his shoulder so he couldn't see her blush.
