NEWT POV

"NEWT!" Alby shouts.

I sprint over to where he stands.

"What?" I ask, slowing down, hands on my hips.

"New Greenie's coming." He tells me.

I grin. "Wonderful."

We wait by the edge of the Box. Soon, it comes up, carrying a scared boy. His deep brown hair is matted to his head and his chocolate eyes are full of fear. I look at him, my heart full of pity for the boy. We kneel around him.

"Go get him." Gally says.

I feel a sudden urge to help him out myself. For some strange reason, I don't want Alby doing it. I wrap my hand around his, his warm skin meeting mine.

"Day one, Greenie. Rise and shine." I say, helping him out of the Box.

He stands, slightly shaky, and then he starts to run.

"OH!" Zart shouts. "Hey, we got a runner!"

"Oh!" The entire crowd gasps as he falls on his face.

He rises to his feet and looks around, taking in the massive walls.

"TAKE IT ALL IN!" Alby shouts.

I run over to him. "Hello. You're not going to run again, okay?" I say gently. He nods, the fear slowly melting from his eyes. "My name is Newt. Can you tell me something about yourself? Who you are? Where you came from? Anything?" I ask, hope dripping from my voice though I know there is none.

"No."

"Can you tell me your name?" I ask, wrapping my hand around his arm.

"I, uh, I can't remember anything." He says, the fear returning to his golden-brown eyes. "Why can't I remember anything?"

I grip his arm tighter. "It's okay." He starts looking around panicked. "Hey, relax. Relax. It's normal. It happened to all of us." He nods slowly. "You'll get your name back in a day or two. It's the one thing they let us keep."

He swallows. "What is this place?" He asks.

"Let me show you."

I pull him towards the main area.

"We eat here. We sleep here." I say, pointing to different areas of the Glade. "We grow our own food, we build our own shelter. Whatever we need, the Box provides. The rest is up to us."

"The Box?" He asks, confused.

I bite the inside of my cheek as my heart flutter involuntarily. "Yeah, it's sent up once a month with supplies and a new Greenie. This month, it's you. Congratulations."

"Sent up?" He asks. "By who, though? Who put us here."

I sigh. "I'm sorry, Greenie, that we don't know." We stand in silence for a bit. "Hey, that was some dash you made earlier.  For a second I thought you had the chops to be a Runner, until you face planted. That was great."

He nods. "Wait, a Runner?" He asks, confused.

"Yeah. They're the only ones who know what's beyond those walls." I say, pointing around us. "Listen, Alby tells every Greenie this, so I might as well tell mine." Mine. The word echos in my head. "There are three rules. 1, do your part. 2, never hurt another Glader. And 3, never go beyond those walls." I look him dead in the eyes. "I'm serious, Greenie. Never."

He nods. "Okay."

Later, I see the Greenie walking be the entrance.

"Greenie, what did I say?" I ask.
