NEWT POV
My fingers brush Thomas's arm as he runs in, doing nothing.
"THOMAS!" I cry as the door almost crush him.
I try to go in after him but Alby grabs my wrist. I fight against him but he wraps his arms around my chest, pinning me against him.
"THOMAS!" I shout again, though it's hopeless as the doors are shut. Not even noise can get through those walls.
"Newt, he's gone." Alby says to me his warm breath hitting my ear.. "No one survives a night in the Maze."
I struggle against his arms, not relenting. "THOMAS!" I scream as the sun sets.
"NEWT!" Alby shouts. "Do we need to put you in the Pit?" He asks me.
I stop fighting against his arms and I sink to the ground. I bury my face in my hands. Thomas is gone. And I don't even know why I care. Alby puts his hands on my shoulders and tries to make me move.
"Newt, come on." He says gently. "You have to forget him."
"I CAN'T FORGET HIM, ALBY!" I shout, turning towards him, standing. "YOU THINK I CAN FORGET HIM JUST BECAUSE HE'S A GREENIE!" Tears start to run down my face. "HE'S-HE WAS DIFFERENT, ALBY!"
Alby looks at me. "Newt, come on." He says. He tries to pull me along but I slam my back against the entrance to the maze, sending a shock through my body.
"NO!" I shout. "HE COULD STILL BE ALIVE!"
Alby sighs but nods seeing I won't budge. "Okay, Newt, fine, stay here."
I press my forehead against the cool stone, warm tears falling down my cheeks. Then, I feel a hand on my shoulder.
"Newt?" I hear Chuck ask.
"What?" I ask, sniffing, turning around.
"Why do you care so much about this Greenie?" He asks me, sitting down next to me.
I lick my lips, salty tears entering my mouth. "He's...He was different, Chuck." I tell him.
"No, he wasn't." Chuck says. "He was just like any other Greenie. So why was he so special to you? You hardly even knew him. We hardly even knew him."
My shoulders start to shake. I can't admit what I felt-feel for him. "He wasn't." I lie. "He was just another Greenie."
Chuck nods and leaves. "Okay, Newt. Goodnight, I guess."
I draw my knees up to my chest and bury my head in my arms. He's never coming back.
The next morning I wake to the loud clanking of the doors. I fell asleep outside of the doors so I jump up. No Thomas. Tears spill out of my eyes again when I see him and Minho carrying Alby. Then, I break the third rule. I run straight into the Maze and throw my arms around him, burying my face into his neck. Minho carries Alby the rest of the way.
"I thought you were gone forever!" I cry.
"Never." He says, hugging me. "Dying doesn't seem all that fun."
I chuckle as the tears stop rolling down my cheeks onto his shirt.
"ALRIGHT BOYS!" Gally shouts. "OUT OF THE MAZE!"
I don't want to, but I peel myself off of him, resisting the temptation to grab his hand.
"How did you guys make it out?" Someone asks.
"You saw a Griever?" I pry.
"Yeah, I saw one." Thomas admits.
"He didn't just see one! He killed one!" Minho cries.
I look up at Thomas with awe, who nods.
Gally makes us go to a Gathering, but it's interrupted by the sound of the Box alarm.
"It's coming back up!" Alby says.
"It shouldn't be." I say, rising to my feet.
When it arrives, I hop into it before anyone else can.
"Newt, what do you see?" Thomas asks me.
There's a girl laying at the bottom, her black hair spread behind her like wings. Her skin is pearly white and her lips are a vivid pink.
"It's a girl!" I say. I look at her again. "I think she's dead!"
"What's in her hand?" Thomas asks, seeing something peeking out from between her fingers.
I reach down and retrieve a piece of paper from her fingers. "It says...she's the last one...ever." I look up. "What the hell does that mean?"
She gives a raspy breath, her eyes flashing open, an electric blue.
"WHOA!" I say.
"Thomas..." She breathes and passes out once again.
"Now you think I'm overreacting?" Gally asks harshly.
Thomas and I sit together on his hammock, everyone else flocking over the girl.
"I thought you were gone." I say. "Why did you do such a stupid thing?"
"I..." He sighs. "I honestly don't know. It was an instinct of sorts."
I hit his arm. "Never do that again, you idiot."
"Hey!" He says, chuckling. "I'm not an idiot!"
I sigh. "Whatever." I make to stand but he grabs my wrist.
"Wait." He says. "Don't go yet."
"Why not?" I ask.
"There's no need to." He says. "Besides, you're my only friend here."
I laugh, sitting back down. "That's not true. Chuck likes you."
"Yeah, well, Gally hates me." He says.
"Gally hates everyone." I say.
"I don't know..." Thomas says, putting his hands in his lap, looking down.
"I do." I say. "Listen, don't let Gally bother you, okay? He's harmless."
"You're lying." Thomas says. "He's not harmless. He could..."
"I outrank him." I interrupt. "I promise I won't let anything happen to you, Tommy." I say, moving closer so our shoulders brush.
He blushes. "I bring these things onto myself." Thomas says, lowering his head.
"Yeah, you do." I say, flicking his temple.
"Ow, Newt!" He says, clutching his head.
"Oh, you baby!" I tease. "Shut up."
He laughs, clutching his stomach and leaning backwards. I smile, watching him. God, what is wrong with me?
"Well, it's getting late." I get up. "Don't let the Grievers bite." I say in a sing-song voice.
"Oh, shut up." He says, pushing me. "Go to sleep."
"I was." I say. "Goodnight, Tommy." .
"Goodnight, Newt. And Thomas?" I whisper.
"Yeah?"
"Thanks for coming back."
