NEWT POV

I sit on a stump, tapping my feet, waiting for Thomas to come back.

"What if he doesn't come back?" I anxiously ask Gally.

"He'll come back, Newt." Gally says, rather aggressively.

"But what if he doesn't?" I ask again.

"He survived one night, why couldn't he survive another."

I nod, taking that in. He's right, after all.

"Hey, what's the deal with you two anyway?" Gally asks me.

"What do you mean?" I ask, paling.

"You are with each other 24/7." Gally says.

"We're best friends, shuck-face." I say harshly. He cannot know how I feel about Thomas.

"Jesus." He says. "Calm down. I was only asking."

I fiddle with my hands. Then, Thomas runs over. I sprint over to him and hit him.

"Hey!" He says. "What was that for?"

"You were gone too long! You could have spent another night in the maze!" I say.

He chuckles and smiles but then turns to the others.

"What the hell have you done now, Thomas?" Gally asks, sighing.

Thomas grabs my wrist and pulls me closer to him and I blush. "We found something, a new passage." He says.

"We think it could be a way out." Minho says.

"Really?" Gally asks incredulously.

"It's true. We opened a door, something we've never seen before." Minho says. "I think it must be where the Grievers go during the day."

"Wait, whoa, whoa, whoa." Chuck says. "You're saying you found the Griever's home? And you want to go in?"

"It could be our way out, Chuck." Thomas says.

"Yeah, or there could be a dozen Grievers on the other side. Truth is, Thomas doesn't know what he's done, as usual." Gally says.

Thomas opens his mouth but I walk up to Gally before he can.

"At least he did something, Gally!" I say. "What have you done?"

Gally glares at me. "Newt, I don't know what the hell is going on with you lately, but you need to quit it."

My face turns red with anger and slight embarrassment. "You're just mad because you haven't done anything to help us escape. Ever.

Then, Gally shoves me. I land on my wrist.

"AH!" I cry.

Thomas walks up to Gally and punches him in the face.

"THOMAS NO!" I shout from the ground.

The pair start to fight until Teresa walks over.

"HEY!" She shouts. "IT'S ABLY!"

I sit on a bed in the infirmary, cradling my wrist. Thomas and Gally are getting stitched up by Jeff and Clint. Teresa and Minho are talking to Alby. I lower my head. Then, Thomas comes over to me.

"Hey, Newt." He says.

"Are you okay?" I ask, exasperated.

"I'm fine. What about you?" He asks.

"I'm fine. Just a broken wrist." I say. "It's my fault anyway."

He shakes his head. "No." He says. "No, it wasn't your fault. It was mine."

"No." I start to cry silently, turning away from him so he doesn't see me. "I'm the one who walked up to him."

"Hey, are you alright?" He asks gently, noticing my tears anyway.

I nod, shaking slightly.

Thomas pulls shut the curtain around the bed.

"What are you doing?" I ask, wiping away my tears.

Then, he hugs me.

"Tommy, what are you doing?" I ask again.

"It's called a hug, you shank." He says.

I chuckle but wrap my arms around him too, being careful about my wrist.

"Now you going to tell me what's wrong?" He asks.

"I'm fine, Tommy." I say, pulling away from him.

"If you say so."

Then, Gally rips the curtains around. "What were you doing?" He asks, suspicious.

"What's it to you, Gally?" I spit.

"Geez, Newt. Whatever!" He says. "But come on, the doors aren't closing."

THOMAS POV

We jump up and run out of the building. Newt and I run into the main area.

"THEY'RE HERE!" I hear a shout.

"Grievers." Newt says.

He grabs my hand and we run into the cornfield. Then, Zart gets snatched out of the field. Newt leads me into the Council Hall. We hide in the back with Chuck, Alby, Teresa, and a few others. We hear a crash and a Griever screaming at the door, knocking aggressively on the door, trying to get in...I pull Newt closer to me. I can't have him taken. I don't know what I'd do. Then, the Griever climbs on to the roof.

It reaches in and pulls a pole out so the building collapses. We scream. It grabs Chuck. I grab his hands and Newt wraps his arms around my waist to help me pull. We pull and the Griever lets go. But then, it grabs Alby. I try to save him, but I can't.

"Thomas." He says. "Take care of them for me." I nod, in tears.

Newt pulls me back and we all hide in the back. Newt grabs my hand. I try to get out, but Newt won't let me. Then, as the sun rises, we get out.

"Where is everyone?" I ask.

Chuck tosses the stinger in his hands.

"Careful, Chuck." Newt says gently.

Then, Gally walks over and punches Thomas in the face.

"This is all you, Thomas!" Gally shouts. "Take a look around!"

"Back off, Gally!" Newt cries, moving closer to him. "This isn't his fault."

"You heard what Alby said!" He shouts. "He's one of them!"

"One of who?" Newt asks.

"He's one of them, they sent him down here to destroy everything, and now he has!" Gally shouts. "Look around, Thomas, look around. This is your fault!"

"Back off, Gally!" Newt hisses in Gally's face. "What are you talking about? Calm down!"

"Maybe he's right." I say.

"Thomas-" Teresa says.

"I need to remember, Teresa." I say. And I drive the stinger into my leg. A searing pain shoots through my whole body. I cry out.

"THOMAS!" I hear cries around me.

"Get the other syringe."

"It'll be okay, Tommy."

And I pass out, the black spreading across my vision.
