My phone went off then, making us both jump. I stood up, which was a mistake, because Sasuke was less than a centimetre away from me and we ended up being incredibly close. I cleared my throat and quickly moved away to the other side of the room where my phone was resting on the mantel piece above the fireplace. I had a message from my dad.

Be in bed by eight, okay, Lucy?

I laughed bitterly. Yeah right, dad. Eight o'clock? Really? The trust my parents had in me. I slammed my phone down and turned to find Sasuke sitting on the couch, head in his hands, the volume discarded onto the floor. "Sasuke?" I asked softly. He didn't respond.

I lifted the book from the ground and checked the page. Naruto was desperately trying to convince Sasuke to return to Konohagakure. The look on his face was heart breaking. I could only imagine what it was doing to Sasuke. I lifted up the cushion on my father's armchair and shoved the manga under it fiercely before slamming the cushion back down.

Sasuke glanced up, surprised. Tears glistened in his eyes.

Oh lord, my heart.

"Well, you're my babysitter, let's do something!"

He raised his eyebrows. "Even though you know who I am...you're not going to kick me out?" His voice sounded unsure.

I smiled. "Um, of course not! What the heck? I couldn't kick you out! You're Uchiha Sasuke."

He stood again, looking angry. "Yeah, I'm Uchiha Sasuke, the dumbass that killed his brother and deserted his first real friends!"

There was a long, painful silence.

"You're not a dumbass," I whispered. "You're just lost." Sasuke looked digusted. "Oh yeah? Well, when you're lost, you're supposed to ask for help to get you back on track, not kill the people that will help you!"

"Then why the fuck are you here instead of with them?" I shot back. "I'd kill for friends like them! And...and you." He examined my expression to see if I was serious. "You want to be friends with someone who has the potential to kill you in one second flat?"

I swallowed. "Yeah. 'Cause I know you wouldn't mean it."

He laughed bitterly. "I wouldn't mean it?" I shrugged. "I don't know how else to describe it."

There was a few moments of silence where Sasuke fumed silently, looking like he seriously wanted to rip my throat out.

Then the front window shattered and in slithered a burglar.

I gasped, immediately putting myself in front of Sasuke and yelling, "Run!" "Me? Run? Are you kidding me, Lucy?!" Sasuke shouted. "I'm the fucking ninja here!" My heart fluttered when he said my name. Not the time, Luce.

The thief stood up. He held a dagger in one hand. From the look on his face he wasn't sober. What do I do?

Sasuke was faster, though, than either me or the burglar, and suddenly the man I was just trying to protect him from was flying back out the window. Sasuke followed him with amazing grace outside. Still in shock, I stumbled to the front door and hurried outside. "Sasuke!" I cried. But there was no need for me to worry. I knew already he could take care of himself. There was a loud, sickening crack as bones began to snap under Sasuke's capable hands. I had to look away, gagging, as the smell of blood filled the air. "Sasuke!" I choked. "Sasuke, stop! You're gonna kill him!"

The cries of pain ceased and I chanced opening my eyes. The man was still able to walk — well, limp — and was hurrying down the lane and out the gate. Sasuke stood, glaring after him, blood splattered on his face and hands. I slowly approached.

"Sasuke? Are you alright?" He shook his head. "I'm sorry you saw that," his voice was strained. "I was pissed and I saw an opportunity to take it out on him." He swallowed. "It was close to being you."

My heart fluttered. "Oh."

He sighed. "Still don't want to kick me out?"

I shook my head. "I'm not getting rid of you that easily." He laughed at my stupid turn of phrase. I took his hand gently in my own and tugged.

"C'mon, let's get you cleaned up, you freaking ninja." He laughed again and nodded. We walked inside, hand in hand, to find a blond, blue eyed boy standing in my kitchen.
