Chapter X - my silent wolf

 "You've made The Exchange with The Elders." Malcolm said with a concerned look on his face.

I ran my hand through my hair and recalled the events that had previously happened. The memory becomes clearer. My mate had been given both a blessing and a curse from the Moon Goddess herself. That's why she rejected me. She can't fall in love with her mate or any man or else her powers will be taken away from her.

"The creepy Elder with those green eyes brought you downstairs. You were all passed out, so I had to carry you back in the car." Malcolm explained.

"How did you know I've made the exchange with the Elders?" I sat up straightly on the car seat, fixing my wrinkled clothes.

"You should have seen the triumphant creepy smile on the woman's face. She's giving me chills down my spine whenever I remember it." Malcolm replied. "So, what happened up there that made you, The Alpha, passed out?" he asked.

"Let's get out of here first and I'll tell you along the way." 

While Malcolm was driving home, I told him the whole story of what had happened upstairs. I've explained to him about The Exchange and revealed to him the secret of my mate. 

"Don't even tell a soul about what happened to me or even about the story of my mate or else I'll rip your throat out with my bare hands." I warned him.

Malcolm held his hands up in defeat. "I won't. I swear upon my wolf." He replied seriously and placed his hand on his heart. "Good." I sighed and stared at the road.

Thirty days. Thirty days is all I have to make her fall in love with me. How can I make someone fall in love with me within thirty days?  And in thirty day, I will be losing my wolf. My wolf is what makes me an Alpha. 

I just noticed from the night Athena rejected me, my wolf has gone silent and never even tried to interact with me.

"You know, in thirty days, I will be losing my wolf which means I will be losing my place as the Alpha." I started.

"So?" Malcolm asked.

"You will take my place as the Alpha, Malcolm. Do you understand?" I questioned. Malcolm went silent, his eyes fixed on the road.

"It's not a request for you to turn it down." I said simply. Malcolm's mouth turned into a straight line.  He was quiet for a moment then he shook his head.

"Well, you sure are crazy enough to trade your wolf for your mate, Alpha." he commented, shaking his head. 

Now, I was the one who became silent. He was right. It was never my behavior to act impulsively and decide based on my feelings. All the plan and strategies I have made in order to protect my pack was made from my sound decisions. 

"If you were in my place, Malcolm. You would do the same just to be with your mate." I countered. 

"You know, something about Athena made me want her...need her." I explained.

"And if I am gonna lose my wolf in thirty days despite failing or succeeding with the Exchange I have made with the Elders, then I would do what it takes to make her fall in love with me. It's better to have a mate than to lose both my mate and my wolf in the process." I declared.

She was a challenge. But that what makes it interesting for me to pursue her. 

Malcolm let out low whistle. "Wow." he raised his eyebrows.  "Well, we better find a way to make your mate fall in love with you."

-Athena's POV-

The past days has been difficult. My wolf was barely interacting with me nor was I sensing her presence in my thoughts. At night, I could hear her faint whimper and I tried to soothe her senses.

"We're gonna be okay, with or without a mate."  I tried to tell her, but I could not ignore the fact that there was a heavy feeling in my chest. Although in my mind, I was fully convince that I am extremely fine and okay rejecting that ignorant fool of a mate but my wolf was giving me a hard time.

"We don't need a mate. The only one I need is you, my wolf. We are better together. " I reminded her.
