chapter II - the Alpha

"I could run the whole perimeter for 30 minutes, now do it again, but faster!" I shouted through the meadows where a couple of girls ran around our boundary lines. They were found a week ago in different places, some imprisoned by other packs that we rescued, some were found as rogues sleeping in the forest. Today, I told them to release their emotions and ran as fast as they could.

My black hair was swirling through the wind of the meadows. I placed my hands on my hips and observed their figures. They had ran the whole boundary for 2 hours. A lot of training is still needed for them to improved. They could either break or make the pack.

"Alpha" I heard Reyna's voice through our mindlink.

"Yes?"

"We've got some problem here in the packhouse." Not a day goes by and another problem has surfaced.

"Lets get straight to the point."

"Lyka here was scouting the forest when she found her mate." She explained. Lyca was one of our strongest warriors next to Reyna. We rescued her 4 years ago when she told us her story. She was imprisoned by a group of men and abused her not just mentally or physically. After we knew her story, we searched for the men and separated their heads from their bodies.

I called out one of our pack warriors and told her to manage the newcomers. I hurried back to the packhouse and smelled something horrible. The scent of man. It disgusts me to even smell yet see one. When I got inside, Lyka, one of our warriors, sat across a man with brown hair. When both Reyna and Lyka saw me, they gave me a sign of respect. "Alpha."

I raised my eyebrows at the man. The man had a surprised look across his face. Typical reaction.

"Where are your manners?" I sneered. Lyca gulped and took a glance at her mate. She probably mindlinked him since he immediately put his hand across his chest and bowed a little.

"What's this all about?" I asked Lyca, as I sat at the far end of the couch Lyca's mate was sitting and crossed my legs. I could see Lyca looked afraid when I sat near her mate. She knows I'm capable of snapping someones throat in just a heartbeat.

"Well, you see.." the man started but I cut him off. "Shut your mouth. Your opinion is not recognized in this pack." I snapped, without looking at him. The man went silent and so Lyca explained.

"I-I was scouting the perimeters Alpha when I noticed a sweet scent. I knew I shouldn't leave my post but I-I just..just felt something pulling me to him." She explained.

"I searched in the forest and found his wolf." She looked at him, her eyes softened.

"And what might be the name of this mate that you found?" I asked, crossing my arms and leaning my back on the couch, ignoring the existence of the male sitting at the opposite end.

"Adrian, Alpha." She replied, her eyes back on me then she looked down at her lap, a sad smile formed on her lips. "And this Adrian came from what pack?" My fingers digged into my skin. Maybe this was a trap. Maybe this was a plan to overpower my pack, to hurt my pack.

Lyca glanced down to my fingers and swallowed. "He's from the Midnight Crescent Pack, Alpha." She answered, her breathing slowed down as if she's waiting for something to happen, something like me lashing out her mate's throat which was a possibility.

"Well, I hear the Alpha of that pack sleeps with countless of women and has anger issues." I chuckled sarcastically while checking my nails. Hm, I think I needed a manicure.

"Well, he is very-" He was about to say something when I glared at him, stopping him mid-sentence. He looked down and shuffled farther away from on the three-seater couch.

Lyca cleared her throat making me break my glare from her mate to her. I cocked my head to the side with raised eyebrows, waiting for her to say something, watching her intently.

"Alpha, it is not written in our law that it's forbidden for us to be with our mate, is it not?" She mindlinked me. It was true. The only one who was forbidden to be with their mate was me. Having a mate means falling in love and loving means losing my power and strength to protect my pack. I couldn't let my pack be vulnerable. Plus, I despise men, they sicken me.

"But it is written in our law that man has no place in this pack so choose, your mate or the pack. One must go." I replied back.  I was confident that she would choose us over him, we spent all those years training and fighting together. But in the back of my mind, I was worried to let this sister of mine go with her mate, what if he mistreats her? Still, it was her decision to be made and I cannot argue with that.

Her eyebrows furrowed. She opened her mouth then closed it. She was having a hard time as well.

I sighed and stood up. "I'll give you a night to decide." I firmly stated, looking intently at her. Hoping she can understand my eyes that she is needed here, not with some infatuated mate. She still looked confused, torn between two choices.

"As for the male wolf, let him sleep downstairs." I glanced at the boy. He sighed in relief but he did not know what waited for him downstairs.

In a blink of an eye, just to intimidate this boy, I moved in one swift movement and placed my hand around his neck as he sat and stared at me wide-eyed. It was just a light touch but just enough so my fingers had created small crescent shapes around his neck. His chest heaving up and down, clearly afraid of his dear life which made me smile in the inside. Pathetic.

"Don't even try to mindlink anyone from your pack or you'll never see the light of day again." I hissed, narrowing my eyes. He nodded, with his eyes looking away.

"Alpha, please don't hurt him, I-" Lyca was about to protest through the mindlink but I cut her off. I removed my hand and walked away, turning my back to them. And then I mindlinked with Reyna.

"Escort this man downstairs. I don't trust him one bit." I ordered.

"We'll hand him over to his pack tomorrow once Lyca has decided." I added.

"Understood, Alpha." Reyna replied.
