CHAPTER SIX

-: fourth year :-

── IN WHICH SHE WAKES

. . .

The next morning Jane awoke rather early, but the dawn had passed and the morning sun was streaming through the open window, the veil curtains blowing in the breeze.

Beams of sun were filled with floating particles of dust, stirred up by the gentle, warm wind that moved through the attic, ruffling Jane's ginger hair as she sat up, pulling it back fully with a white ribbon, tilting her back towards the cheval mirror in the corner of her room as she tied the bow.

She couldn't lounge around in the bed, no matter how soft the blanket that had covered her sleeping form was, despite it almost being too warm for one. And so, instead of laying back down and enjoying the morning with a book, she climbed out of bed.

Jane had showered the night before, but she padded along the short attic landing and into the tiny bathroom opposite the door to her room, pushing the door open and finding it in a similar situation to her room, windows wide open and the sun shining in.

Rather than showering she simply washed up, washing her face in cold water, washing her hands and then undoing the ribbon with a sigh, pulling a brush through her hair and tying the bow once more.

Making her back through into her room, Jane switched her pajamas for a pair of denim shorts, debating on a shirt and picking out a mesh shirt. It was patterned with flowers and had quite puffy sleeves, a dipped neckline which tightened in the centre, and where the shirt met the denim, it sinched and flowed outwards.

Pulling on a pair of shoes, she grabbed the same bag she had used the day before, placing a second book along the two she had taken yesterday as well as her notebook and making her way downstairs.

Breakfast was fully in swing as Jane stepped foot in the kitchen, Flora leaning over a cup of tea and Angela stood by the stove. "Good morning darling!" The woman announced, slipping out of her seat and greeting Jane with a hug, pulling her over to the chairs. "Now, Angela was rather happy to prepare you and your friend lunch, and it's been packed up."

"Thank you." Angela pushed the package in front of Jane, who put it into her bag, smiling up at the woman.

"No problem, it's nice to make packed-lunches again, reminds me of when my children were in school." Angela beamed. "Your breakfast is just being made, and whilst you're eating that I'll get on with a portion for this friend of yours."

Jane thanked the woman again, eating her own bacon sandwich as it was placed down in front of her, listening to Flora mumbled about her headache. And as she glanced at the clock, Jane pulled herself off of her seat.

"I really should go." Jane smiled, looking between the two women. "I'm sorry if it's any trouble me not being here and able to help."

"No - don't worry about it." Florence smiled, taking the packaged bacon sandwich and placing it in Jane's hand. "Me and Angela are doing just fine. Besides, I'll be having some workers over to check up on some things."

"If it's okay, could I possible do some baking at some point? I used to do a lot at the Home and would like to do a few things." Jane was almost out of the kitchen when she turned back. She was greeted with nods.

"Just let me know what you'll need when you get back." Florence said with a smile, getting up out of her seat and walking over to Jane, wrapping an arm around her shoulders and walking with her to the front door. "Have fun, darling. And I know you're a smart girl, but be safe please."

"I'll try my best." Jane smiled, heading down the drive, Florence waving her off until she turned the corner. The Everleigh girl made her way down the drive, pushing open the ivy-covered gate and towards the village.

It was a beautiful morning, birds singing in the trees their usual cheerful tune, and the weather was nothing but perfect, clouds in the sky a wonderful fluffy white.

Jane and Harry had agreed to meet up at the tree they had spent the previous day sat under, and so rather than heading into the town of Little Whinging, Jane used the map to get to the Green Bridge from the outskirts, passing groups of little kids in the sun.

After crossing the Green Bridge - which was a much paler green then it once would have been, paint having chipped and rusted as the years passed, Jane walked along the path besides the riverbank, stalks of grass tickling her ankles.

And when she arrived at the tree, Harry hadn't yet arrived. But with a glance at the old watch strapped to her wrist, Jane found herself there earlier than expected.

With a content look in her eyes, she pulled out her book, pulling her knees to her chest and beginning to read, waiting for the Potter boy to arrive.

It wouldn't take long, and then they would be off.
