Light begins to uncover the figures face. I sighed in relief when I saw that it was just Kai.
He stops in his tracks and lifts his hand to summon me over to him. His normal, bored expression still sitting over his face.
His eyes look over me for a second before meeting my own.
"I- uh" *really awkward cough* "our rides over here." He stated after composing himself.
I look at the car behind me then back at Kai, who was already striding away.
"But the car is behind us?" I questioned whilst running to catch up to the tall man.
"If we stayed in the same car then they would find us straight away."
"By who? Wait are we running? Who are we running fr- Oh Shit." Realisation strikes me. Kai simply turns around and waits for me to carry on talking.
"They weren't just robbing the shop were they?" My grip tightened around the older clothes folded in my arms.
"No." Kai dropped his head, looking at the ground.
"But-" I was cut off before I said any more.
"Look just get in the car. It's not safe to talk out here." His eyes frantically searched around us as he hissed at me.
It's not safe? How much shit is this guy in? How much shit am I in?
What the heck is going on.
I turned to my right to find a black Audi A3. It looks brand new. But it wasn't here when we first arrived, was it? And i didn't hear it coming in when I was inside the station. How could I miss all this?
As I stepped into the car, I could immediately smell that 'brand new car smell'. Probably one of my favourite smells.
Kai made his way into the car almost straight after.
"A new car?" I asked whilst running my hand over the untouched material.
"Just for my guest of honour" He smirked back at me before starting the engine and driving away from the gas station.
"Why have you never asked my name?" I asked breaking the weird 5 minutes of silence
"Because- I. Well... what is your name then..."
Kai seems like the kind of guy to always know what to say. What's up with this constant uncertainty.
"Astrid. Friends call me Ash, but I wouldn't say we're quite there yet" Winking back at Kai.
He did nothing in return. Silence fell over the both of us again.
"So...those guys? They after me or you?" I asked, breaking the horrid silence yet again.
"Both in a way. But I don't fully know their whole objective. We don't get too much in-tell from the enemy"
"Enemy? And we?"
"Mhm"
"Well, who are you in this whole situation?" Raising one eyebrow.
"Obviously the good guys" He chuckled as if it was obvious.
I clearly wasn't impressed. "Who do you work for?"
"UUA"
Kai glared at me as I burst into fits of laughter.
"I-I'm sorry...UUA? You're like...20. The age requirement is 25 with military training beforehand." I looked at him unconvinced as I calmed myself down.
"Close. I'm 19. And yes, that would be the case if my skills weren't already through the roof"
Cocky much? If my dad stuck around, I would be so much better. I rolled my eyes as I looked back at him.
"Your parent's agents too then?"
"Something like that." His expression softened. He looked...sad?
Thick silence fell upon us again as the conversation died. Neither of us felt the need to say anything and I was getting too tired to put up with Kai's crap replies. I glanced over to the clock to see the time, 12:08. It's my birthday.
Wait! My birthday party! Have my friends noticed I'm gone?
"Hey, I know you don't want people to follow you, or something like that. But my friends will surely send a message out saying I'm 'missing'."
"Hmm? Oh, I've already sent them a message saying you've gone out of town with a family friend for a few days. They all completely understand."
"You? Y- what!? You went through my phone? And told them? No that's unfair! What the hell man!?" My eyes were practically sending death threats through to his.
He didn't flinch or change in any way. "Darling if you wanted your friends to worry or, even better! If you wanted me to let you die, then pleeease let me know for next time!"
I don't like how similar his sarcasm is to my own. I feel like I'm fighting myself.
And... darling? My stomach twinged at how nice the word sounded coming from the male's mouth.
Oh, for god sake Ash! Stop messing around!
"Well...how did u even get in my phone?" I crossed my arms and pouted my lip like a child.
"I mean, I must admit. 1234 was a really hard code. Took me a whole 2 minutes" A smile beginning to form across his face.
I couldn't think of anything else to say to him. I always forget other codes so 1234 was my safest option.
Besides all that, I couldn't help but feel awful for 'ditching my friends'. Even though I know that's not true. How long will it be until I see them again? If I ever will...
I could see Kai turn to me through the corner of my eye. "Happy birthday Astrid".
I turned to meet his eyes and smiled sweetly. We both sat staring for a little too long. I broke the look to remind Kai that he was driving. He kicked himself at not paying attention.
My eyes started getting really heavy when I glanced at the clock once again to see it was 12:45. So, I decided to let myself sleep.
