Callie's POV
I don't want Harry to see me cry. Even thought he will probably see me cry a lot since we will be in the same family. I have cried so much for my mother. She wouldn't want me to, but I can't help it. She was so pretty and funny and smart. I am exactly like her- Brown hair, gray-blue eyes, freckles, pale skin, long legs and a slim waist. But she was beautiful. Her hair was shiny, mine...isn't. Her eyes popped and mine are so plain. I wish she was here to give me advice. I don't know what kind of advice I need, but she would give me some if she were here.
I wipe the tears from my eyes and look up at Harry.
"I am so sorry, Callie," He says to me.
"No, it, uh, it's okay," I sniffle. I might as well explain everything else now. "She had Skin Cancer. It was left untreated because she didn't tell anyone and no one noticed at first. It started on her back because she was in the sun a lot because she was a gardener and she had her shirt up because of the horrible heat in Australia. It eventually spread to her stomach and legs. When it started on her arms, we noticed. We took her to a cancer treatment center but it had spread so fast. The doctor's told us it was fatal two weeks before she died. The skin cancer she had is called Melanoma. It is rare and the most deadly. It has something to do with showing pigment in skin once it gets into the cells." I explain.
"Cals," I smile at his nickname for me, already. " I am so sorry."
"It's not like it's your fault," I say.
"I sort of know how you feel. My dad left when I was like 6. I know it's hard." Harry says.
"Har-"
I don't know how to reply so I stop myself.
"Oh, is that my nickname now?" Harry asks and we laugh.
"I just don't know how to respond."
"You don't have to. Why don't I let you get settled? If you need anything just call me or come get me." Harry tells me.
"Okay. Thanks Har." I giggle at his nickname.
"No problem. Later, Cals." He says and walks away.
I unpack all of my clothes and put thm in my dresser. I put my lap top on the desk and unload my notebooks and books and journals into the dest and beside table. I lay my iPhone on my desk and hook it up to the charger. I switch the plain sheets for lavender ones and look at my room. I so need to paint the walls.
"Callie, how are you feeling?" My dad startles me. He is standing in the doorway of my new room.
"Fine. I unpacked already," I tell him.
"Are you cold or anything?" Dad asks.
"No, I am fine," I say again and sit on my new bed. Dad sits beside me and smiles.
"So, how do you like everything?" He asks.
"The house is nice. Large. And Gemma is sweet. Oh and so is Anne."
"Yeah, isn't she lovely?" Dad chuckles lost in thought." What about Harry? He good to you?"
"Uh, as good as a step-brother should be. He isn't my boyfriend Dad. You don't have to make sure I am cool around him. It'll be okay." I laugh.
"Okay, dinner is ready whenever you want to come down." Dad stands and kisses my forehead before walking out. I laugh to myself before standing up. I brush through my hair with my fingers and walk downstairs. I see Anne, Dad, Gemma, and Harry all seated at the table.
"We have to wait for Callie. She is our family now. We don't eat until the whole family is here." I hear Anne say. I blush as I walk into the dining room. "There she is. Have a seat."
