Chapter One

Richie sat at his desk in art class watching the clock slowly tick around the numbers. It was his last class of the day and all he wanted was for it to be over so he could go home. They were supposed to be working on a paint project and usually Richie loved art but today he just couldn't focus.

"Okay class listen up. I have a big project for you guys as your final before winter break. It will be done in pairs and I'll give you more details tomorrow but for now, I'm giving you your partners. It will be done randomly so don't go looking for your friends," the teacher said. The class silently groaned together. It was so much easier to work with people you knew and were close to. The teacher grabbed a cup of sticks from her desk and passed it to the first person in the first row.

"Once you get your partner, I want you to call them out until everyone has been picked," she said. The student called out their partner and then it was Richie's turn. He was in the first row and personally, thought that this was the best class to be in front of. He pulled out one of the wooden popsicle sticks and looked down at the name. Eddie Kaspbrak. Richie has known Eddie since at least 7th grade and sometimes they talked but you wouldn't call them close.

"Eddie," Richie called out and Eddie looked up at the sound of his name. Eddie frowned slightly but no one saw it. Richie has been known to take projects as a sort of joke. Eddie would probably be the one that did all of the work while Richie cracked jokes every 5 seconds. Richie one the other hand was excited to work with Eddie. Eddie was always so sweet and loyal. Richie would trust his whole life with Eddie.

After everyone had their partners, the bell rang signaling that the last period of the day was over. The halls crowded as students went to their lockers and left the school. Richie was able to spot Eddie through the crowd and caught up to him.

"Eddie! Hey," Richie said and Eddie turned around to face Richie.

"Hi Rich," Eddie replied. Eddie was grabbing books from his locker to take with him.

"So when do you think we should work on the project? I'm free pretty much whenever," Richie shrugged. He didn't have very many friends and no other exciting plans.

"I can't tomorrow or Friday... but I guess today works for me."

"That sounds good. Did you mean right now?" Richie asked.

"Sure. Lemme just grab a few things and then we can go to the library or something," Eddie said and once he got his things, they left for the library in Richie's car. Eddie was looking out the window as Richie drived. There was a long sort of strained silence as Richie tried to come up with something to say. Eddie just wanted to finish the project so they could go their separate ways again.

"So um.... What have you been up to the past few... years?" Richie asked, hoping to start a conversation. Eddie looked up from the window.

"Well... I started drawing a lot. I mostly like to draw people and stuff like that," Eddie shrugged.

"Oh wow. That's actually pretty cool!" Richie said, mildly impressed. He always thought Eddie would be good at art.

"Thanks," Eddie looked down and his face flushed. He didn't know very many people and getting compliments was kinda rare. Richie noticed this and smiled then they drove the rest of the way in comfortable silence. Richie parked the car and they walked into the library together. They found a table with two seats and sat down. There was almost no one else there with them.

"So, she said we need to make portraits of each other," Eddie explained quietly.

"Well it shouldn't take me too long since you're so small," Richie smirked.
