Chapter Twenty

The next day, Richie wanted to do something really special for Eddie. He felt horrible about what had happened and didn't want Eddie to be sad. His heart broke every time he saw Eddie cry. It was one of the saddest things you could see. There was one thing Richie had thought of a few days ago that he knew would scare Eddie to death at first but then would make him so happy. The adrenaline rush would bring Eddie's spirits back up. It would have to wait until night time though.

Eddie got up the next day and was still really down. All of the bad, sad, emotional things that had happened to him and Richie over the past few months were washing over him like a tide. He found it hard to get out of bed that day and Richie knew this. He went into the bedroom and saw Eddie laying there, eyes open. He looked so tired and upset. Richie walked over and knelt down to Eddie's height with the bed. He stroked Eddie's hair.

"Ed's, it's going to be okay. You're going to be okay. You know that, don't you?" Richie said quietly. Eddie nodded and looked down. "I love you, Ed's,"

"I love you too, Rich," Eddie said. Richie got up on the bed and cuddled Eddie. He just hoped that what he was going to do tonight would make Eddie happy again.

That night, Richie was about to start his plan. He wanted to do something really special for Eddie first. He was going to cook him dinner. Richie wanted it to be a surprise so he needed a distraction. He talked to his parents and they thought this was a really cute idea.

"Hey, Eddie? Do you mind going to the store to get a few things? I have a small list right here. I would go but I have a lot of work to do tonight," Richie's mom said to Eddie. Eddie being the sweet person he was, agreed right away and was out of the house a few minutes later.

"Thanks, mom. Eddie's been so stressed and sad lately. I really want to do something to make him happy again," Richie said and started getting out ingredients for one of the only things he could make: spaghetti.

"Of course, honey! I'll be upstairs if you need anything," Mrs. Tozier replied. Richie nodded and got to work. It wasn't particularly difficult to make spaghetti but he didn't know when Eddie would get back so he needed to work quickly. He poured the noodles into a pot of water and waited for it to boil which took forever. He then drained the water out and poured in the sauce. By then dinner was pretty much ready and all Richie needed to do was set the table for Eddie. He finished that and hoped Eddie would come home soon. He heard the door unlocking and ran up to it. Eddie walked in.

"Hi, babe," Eddie greeted him. Richie smiled.

"Hi, baby. Just, let me take those for you," Richie said and gestured to the grocery bags Eddie was holding. Eddie handed them over and walked into the kitchen.

"Something smells really good. Did you guys already eat?" Eddie asked. He was so hungry.

"Actually, no we haven't. I made you dinner," Richie explained. Eddie walked up to Richie.

"Can I guess what you made?" Eddie smirked. "Spaghetti?" Richie laughed and nodded.

"Rich, thank you so much," Eddie said, standing up on his tip toes and kissing Richie. After a second, Richie pulled back.

"Of course, Eddie. You've been so sad lately. I just wanted to do something to make you happy," Richie said.

"Rich, you don't have to do anything to make me happy. You just being here, with me, makes me happier than you know," Eddie said as they walked to the dining room to eat. They ate and the spaghetti was really good. Richie even refrained from cracking too many jokes about it. Eventually, Richie got up and took Eddie's hand.

"Come on. I wanna show you something," Richie said and they left the house. They got in Richie's car and Richie started driving. It was almost 10:30 PM and there were not very many people on the roads since they lived in Derry, Maine. Richie drove to the highway and since they were practically the only one's on the road, started pushing the gas pedal harder. The car went faster.

"Rich, slow down! The police! We'll get in so much trouble!" Eddie exclaimed.

"Oh come on! Where? I don't see any police. I actually don't see anyone at all!" Richie said and went even faster.

"Richie! I don't think this is safe - oh my god, Rich, slow down!" Eddie yelled. Richie just went faster. He rolled down the windows and the wind whipped in their faces. Eddie stopped yelling and laughed. He smiled and Richie smiled too. The wind was blowing in their faces and Eddie threw his head back and closed his eyes, letting everything surround him and consume his thoughts. He was having more fun than he had had in a while. The adrenaline was pumping through both of them and they were pushing 90 miles per hour. You could see the city in the distance. The lights were sparkling and it was beautiful. It was almost pitch black outside and the stars were shining brightly. Richie drove this fast for a long time and then slowed down when they got to the city and had to stop. Richie drove to a car garage inside of a building.

"Where are we going, Richie?" Eddie asked when they got out of the car and their voices echoed in the empty garage.

"You'll see. Just, trust me," Richie said and led Eddie up to the elevator where they took it to the highest level of the building. Then, they took the stairs that led to the roof of the building. Richie and Eddie got up to the roof, holding hands and walked up to the edge of the building and looked out. They sat down on a blanket that Richie had brought up.

"Just, look around and relax. I've been here before and it kind of, gives me a new perspective on life," Richie explained. Eddie nodded and they looked at all of the bright, sparkling lights of the buildings below. It really was a breathtaking sight. Eddie thought about the past few days and let all of the negative thoughts fly away from him with the wind. Richie watched Eddie with such loving eyes.

"This place is so beautiful. I love it," Eddie whispered. It was so quiet you might have mistaken it for the wind.

"Yeah, it is beautiful. But you know what? I don't need this since I have something else that's more beautiful," Richie said. Eddie looked over at him.

"What? Can I see it?" Eddie asked.

"Well, I mean if you look in the mirror you can. It's you, Ed's. You're the most beautiful thing I've ever seen and nothing could ever change that," Richie said and scooted closer to Eddie. Eddie looked down and blushed.

"You're the best thing that has ever happened to me. Rich, I need you. I actually do. I don't know where I would be in life or if I would be here at all today without you. You make me happier than anything else ever had or ever will. There's no other way to describe except for perfect. You are perfect. I love you so much," Eddie said and leaned his head on Richie's shoulder.

"I love you too, babe. I love more than anything," Richie said. They sat there in silence, looking out, watching the lights and the occasional car passing by. They both felt so lucky to have each other. They stayed there all night. Eddie fell asleep on Richie's shoulder eventually and Richie sat there, holding Eddie close.
