Chapter Ten
It was the last day of school before summer vacation and Richie and Eddie were anxiously waiting for the bell to ring signaling the end of school. They were going to New York the week after summer vacation started, all paid by Richie's parents. They thought that Richie and Eddie deserved some quality time together after all that had happened. The second that bell rang, Richie and Eddie ran out the front doors of the high school, officially on summer break. Richie twirled Eddie around and then hugged him. They went to the grassy field behind the school and laid down on the grass, watching the clouds. The sun shined perfectly on their faces, warming them up while the breeze refreshed them. The leaves on the trees rustled and swayed in the wind. The grass was so soft and green.
"I'm so excited to go to New York, Rich," Eddie said happily.
"Me too Ed's. A whole week in New York together. What could possibly ruin that?" Richie said, smiling. They were both so happy, happier than they had been in a long time.
One Week Later
It was finally time to go to New York. Richie and Eddie were packing last minute things into their luggage quickly and rushing around the house, getting ready to leave. Richie's parents were doing the same thing. It was 5:00 in the morning and they wanted to be at the airport by 6:00.
"RICHIE! WHERE ARE MY SHOES?" Eddie yelled across the room. He couldn't find them anywhere. Richie laughed and went over to the closet. He pulled out Eddie's sneakers.
"I hid them from you," Richie said, laughing.
"Why the hell would you do that?" Eddie, said, also kind of laughing. They both started cracking up and finally finished packing up. They made great time to the airport and were through all of the exhausting airport security and baggage by 6:45. They were so tired already. Richie and Eddie sat together, holding hands. They were so excited to go to New York. They had so many plans. They would go to Times Square and would see a Broadway show. They also wanted to go to Central Park. There was so much they wanted to do and such little time to do it in.
"Flight 2264 to New York boarding now," it said on the overhead speaker. That was their flight.
"C'mon Ed's! Let's go," Richie said, jumping up and taking Eddie over to the boarding line. Richie's parents followed them. They got on the plane and buckled their seats."There's no one else I would rather go to New York with than you babe," Richie said with a small smile on his face.
"I feel like I'm going on an incredible journey with you to a magical world. A world that's all our own. Us on top of the world. We're on a trip to that magical place," Eddie said quietly. It sounded so poetic and artistic.
"A journey to the magical world. I like that," Richie said, looking out the plane window.
"Our magical world," was the last thing either of them said before the plane took off.
It didn't take very long to get from Maine to New York City. Only a little bit over an hour and a half. Richie and Eddie watched a movie on Richie's computer, sharing earbuds to pass the time. It was a romantic comedy, The Wedding Singer. It was Richie's favorite movie and Eddie hadn't seen it. The movie ended just as they were landing.
"That movie is so good!" was Eddie's reaction.
"I knew you would like it! And now, we're in New York City," Richie said as they gathered their bags and got in line to leave the plane. The airport was so different from the one in Maine. It was so busy. Crowded with people and when they left the airport, it was like they were on another planet. Neither of them had ever been to New York and this was incredible to them. People were on every street, walking around and catching cabs and taxis. The roads were completely full and the buildings were huge! They seemed to reach up for the stars. There were so many stores and places to shop you wouldn't be able to count them if you tried. There were bands and singers on every corner and people selling t-shirts and food on the streets. The energy here in New York was so different from Maine and they loved it. The fast paced, high speed life here was so cool. Richie's dad hailed a taxi and they drove all through the city to their hotel. Eddie's face was practically glued to the window, taking in all the beautiful sights. Richie thought this was adorable. They got to their hotel and checked into their two rooms, one for Richie and Eddie, and one for Richie's parents.
