"Are you excited, Iris?" My mother said with a big grin on her face.
"Excited for what, mother?"
I asked while crossing my arms and making a frown."Well of course to meet Sir William, dear,"My mother replied. I was silent for a long moment, I could hear mine, my mother's, and my younger sister's heavy breathing. I could also hear the horses pulling the carriage over bumps, rocks, and mud holes."I don't know if I am excited mother, I don't even know, Sir William. I think, I am more nervous than I am excited," I explained to my mother while looking outside the window. "It's normal to be nervous, Iris. When I met your father I was dreadfully nervous indeed!" My mother reassured me while trying to straighten out my sister's dress.
"I remember you said you were so nervous that you vomited on father!" My sister smiled looking at my mother with wide eyes.
"Of all the things I tell you Ethel, that's the one thing you choose to remember? I didn't vomit on him, I almost did!" My mother said with a big frown on her face. "Do we have to go meet him, mother?" I asked."Yes Iris, we have to meet him. We had to cancel twice already, because you young lady didn't feel like going those two other times," "I am just not ready to get married mother! If I was ready to get engaged right now, I want to pick who I am engaged to!" I said angrily to my mother. "Not this again, Iris," My mother said while rolling her eyes at me. "Yes, this again mother! I have told you many times that I don't want to be forced to marry, Sir William. No matter how much money he has!"
"Iris, I am not going to argue with you about this again, I have also told you many many times that, Sir William is a fine man. He would treat you well and be a great husband. I have talked to him before and he is quite lovely Indeed!""Yeah Iris, he is quite lovely. I don't know why you are always complaining so much." Ethel said to me with a smile.
"Well if you like him so much, why don't you marry him than, Ethel!" I yelled.
"Don't talk to your sister like that, Iris!" My mother snapped at me. "But mother listen I-..." I was cut off by my mother yelling."No you listen to me young lady, you are going to marry Sir William, whether you like it or not!" There's a quick silence, as my thoughts ran through my head. I could keep going on this ride to hell or I could walk home. I was going to sit here, but something inside me told me to yell, "Stop the carriage!"
When the carriage stopped and I opened the door grading my dress, so I can quickly get out. My mother was pulling on the bottom of dress trying to keep me inside. When I got out of the carriage I started speed walking the opposite direction from where we were going.
"Iris...Iris, get back here!" My mother yelled. " No," I yelled back quickly looking back at her. "Iris, where are you going?!" " Home. I am walking back home!" I said back to her."But... home is an hour walk. Get back here!" "I don't care mother, I am leaving!" "Iris get back here, I demand it! Don't make me come get you!" I ignored her; knowing she wasn't going to do anything, but let me walk away. "Iris...Iris...IRIS!" She yelled as I continue walking not caring for her crying yells.
...
"Who does she think she is!" I mumble to myself. "Why can't she just understand me for once in her life!" I tell myself while kicking a helpless rock on the road. There was a sound of thunder warning me that it'll rain soon. The rain began to fall lightly for the first couple of minutes, and then the sky decided to cry a waterfall.
"Well isn't this just perfect! I am outside in the cold pouring rain 45 minutes away home!" I yelled to myself starting to walk slower because the rain was starting to make my dress heavy, and was going into my high heel making every step I took painful.
I continue to walk even though walking was bloody torture. " I hate these shoes-..." My complaining was interrupted by a rumbling noise near a cliff. I look over to see a big view of the woods and a town starting to get surrounded by stormy clouds. I start walking over to the cliff trying not to hurt my feet along the way. As I got to the edge of the cliff, I looked at the amazing view telling myself " Well, this would be a lovely sight to see....IF IT WASN'T RAINING!" I yelled at the sky. " Why did you have to rain today of all days!?" I asked. " Please, tell me why?" I yelled at the upset sky.
"You shouldn't be that close to the edge, you might fell." Said a voice behind me. I quietly turn around "You should mind your own business-..." My sentence was interrupted by my heel breaking, and me falling off the edge of the cliff. I quickly grabbed a small tree that was hanging from the the cliff, trying to hold myself up so I wouldn't fall to my death.
I feel my heart pounding. It was screaming so hard I felt like it was going to burst out of my chest at any moment. I try getting myself up, but I ended up almost breaking the branch. I saw a man come to the end of the cliff. I was having a hard time trying to see what he looked like because the rain was getting into my eyes. "Ma'am are you alright?" Said a low soft voice. " Am I alright? No I am not bloody ALRIGHT, what an idiotic question to ask!" I yelled at the man. " Hurry up and help me!" "Alright. Give me your hand!"
He said. I quickly took my hand from the tree to take his hand, but the tree started to break more. I put my hand back on the tree trying not to move a muscle. "Try again, but this time do it slowly." He told me with calm voice. "Slow! Slow would get me killed!" I yelled. "No, moving quickly would get you killed." He replied back. "You don't know anything!" I told him in a mean demeanor. "Well, what I do know is not to stand on a edge of a cliff, especially in a thunderstorm."
I stayed silent. "What's your name?" He said softly. " What? There no time for-..." " Just tell me your name!" He yelled. I growled getting frustrated by his question. "Iris...Iris is my name!" I told him looking down. "Okay Iris. I want to you to slowly lift your arm from the tree and give it to me." " I can't. I told you-..." " Iris!?" " What!?" I yelled angrily. "Do you trust me?" I looked up at the man still unable to clearly look at his face. "What!?" " I said do you trust me, Iris?" I thought about his question. I had this deep feeling inside me; a feeling I couldn't understand. It was a warm emotion that told me to nad 'yes', and so I did. I could see him nodding back to me, and so he replied back with," Okay good. Now take my hand."
I did what he told me to do, and slowly took my hand from the tree as I closed my eyes. Very carefully so I would not brake the small tree any more than I already have. When I finally had his hand he quickly lifted me up; sitting me down somewhere far away from the edge.
Before he could take his hand away, I saw a scare on his left hand. I closed my eyes again, and laid on the dirt floor as I took my hand back. When my heart started to clam down, I could feel myself start to laugh. I laugh for a good while, before quickly getting myself up from the muddy ground. "I'm alive!" I yelled happily throwing my hands in the air feeling the rain in the palms of my hands. I closed my eyes, starting to dance around carelessly not giving any thought of what I was doing.
I quickly stopped, then I remembered I need to thank the man that saved me. I look around, but no one was there. " huh...did he leave?" I thought to myself still trying to look around. I looked up at the sky, and observe the gray clouds. Letting the rain drops softly land on my rosy cheeks. I smiled " I wonder what his name is."
