Chapter 1 - The Underdog

New York - 1931

We see a classroom where a 13 year old Steve Rogers was attentively listening to what the class teacher was teaching. The bell rings and all the students take out their lunchboxes. Steve takes out his and quietly eats. He then sees another kid getting bullied as his lunch was being taken away from him and getting pushed around. The young Steve walks up to him.

Steve

"Hey. Just, stop it."

James (bully)

"What will you do if I don't?"

Steve stares at James, and gets pushed back causing him to fall down.

James

"Stay out of my way."

Steve gets back up and walks up to James.

James

"Did you just...get back up?"

Steve

"You bet."

James

"What's your problem Rogers?"

Steve

"Just leave him alone, and return his lunch."

James

"Why don't you just back off alright?"

James then goes to punch Steve, but he dodges it. Steve then gently takes the victim's lunchbox and returns it to him. He thanks Steve, and Steve smiles. 

EXT. ALLEY - DAY

We see a bruised and beaten up Steve walking on the footpath, until he comes across an alley as he sees James surrounded by three elder boys towering over him.

Bully 1

"Why didn't you get us the lunch?"

James

"I was going to, but Rogers came in between."

Bully 2

"Rogers eh? You couldn't even beat that skinny kid?"

James

"I did. But he didn't let me take the lunchbox."

One bully brutally kicks little James to the ground!

Steve

"Hey! You want me? I'm here."

Bully 2

"There you are."

Steve takes the lid of a trash can as a shield to defend himself.

Bully 1

"What're you gonna do with a trash can?"

Steve gets punched and beaten but manages to try and keep defending himself. 

Steve

"James go!"

But then 2 cops arrive and the bullies run away. Steve helps James get back up. 

James

"I thought...you didn't like me."

Steve

"I don't hate anyone. I just don't like bullies."

James smiles. The 2 boys continue to walk on the footpath. 

Steve

"What was your full name again?"

James 

"James Buchanan Barnes.'

Steve 

"No what they call you at school."

James

"Bucky?"

Steve

"Yeah Bucky. Wanna be friends?"

James

"Sure."
