(Two years ago)

Hans, Eren, Mikasa, Armin, and the others trudged through heavy snow as they walked back to base camp, the blizzard stinging their eyes.

"This training sucks!" Sasha complained to Hans as they walked in a line down the mountain. "I want some food already!"

"That doesn't sound too bad, actually," Hans responded as his stomach growled.

"Come on!" Their instructor yelled from outside the camp, her voice cutting through the air. "You're almost there! Keep it up!"

"Nine hours, twelve minutes," the other instructor commented as they passed the finish line. "Not bad given the conditions you had to trudge through."

They all laid against fence posts, relaxing outside.

"Thought we were dead out there," Eren sighed. "Damn it. Nobody said training was going to be this rough."

"Yeah," Hans agreed, the cold biting at his face. "I hate this."

"Anyone else not feel their legs?" Jean whispered as he shivered.

"Why won't they let us inside already?" Conny complained.

"I bet they're busy laying out a massive banquet for us as we speak," Sasha proposed, giggling in excitement.

"Hey!" Reiner called out, walking over. "You guys seen Christa?"

"Huh?" Eren asked, confused.

"Not for a while," Mikasa answered. "She was with Daz, and he wasn't doing so good."

"Yeah, well, he's not here," Reiner responded. "Ymir isn't back yet either."

"They're probably mixed in with the last squad," Marco pondered.

"That's just it," Reiner replied. "Thomas was leading the last squad. Says they never saw them."

The others gasped in worry.

"Whoa, hold on," Armin whispered. "Do you think they're lost?"

"Oof," Conny sighed. "Man, if they get stuck out there in this snowstorm, they're done for."

"Son of a--!" Eren growled, pushing forward.

"Eren!" Mikasa hissed, grabbing his arm.

"I have to go back out there and try to find 'em!" Eren exclaimed.

"I agree," Hans added. "They won't last long out here."

"I'm with you!" Marco volunteered.

"In the cabin," the female instructor ordered. "Now."

"But, Christa and--!" Eren protested.

"We know," the instructor said, cutting him off. "A rescue team will be sent out at first light."

"First light?!" Hans gasped in disbelief. "That's too long!!!"

"They'll have frozen to death by then!" Eren added.

"Do you want more people to die?!" The instructor hissed at them.

They braced as a gust of wind hit them, the blizzard becoming even harsher.

"Damn it!" Eren hissed in anger.

Christa and Ymir trudged through the snow on the top of the mountain, Daz's unconscious being dragged behind them in a makeshift sled.

"Christa," Ymir sighed, looking over at her. "Seriously, give it up. This is pointless."

Christa ignored her, pushing forward with Daz.
