It had been about two weeks since the lab rats' train mission and it was evident that something between Y/n and Chase had changed. They seemed more comfortable with each other. If you saw the Alpha Dogs together, Chase and Y/n were always next to each other.
When someone would say something ridiculous or plain stupid, they would immediately look at each other with a shared exasperated expression before smiling lightly at the other. If they shared a class and had to do a group project, they would be paired up whether or not the partners were chosen by the teachers. Even if Adam, Bree, or Leo were in the same class.
They would choose each other.
Progress reports had been sent out today. Y/n was proud to flaunt her straight A's to Bree and Adam as they both waited for class to start. Adam was trying to say that his D plus was better because he had the plus. Y/n decided to let her friend have his moment, but Bree tried to explain why he was wrong.
"I can't believe my science teacher says I'm always late to class." Leo pouted as he walked up to the small group. His friends and sister smirked at him.
"You are always late to class," Adam said.
"I know that, but I don't need it publicized."
Chase stomped up to them. He stood next to Y/n, which didn't surprise anyone, and held up his progress report.
"Look at this! An A-minus! I knew my Home Ec teacher had it out for me. Always criticizing my muffins."
Y/n snatched the paper out of her friend's hand and looked at it. She then eyed Chase.
"Maybe it's because you make raisin muffins. You should've made chocolate." Chase glared at her playfully and yanked the paper back. Adam laughed.
"Haha! I beat you! I got a D plus!" He showed his own report, which was littered with C's and below. "Plus because I'm better." Bree debated trying to explain to her brother why D plus was actually a bad grade, but she just decided to give up.
"D is not a good grade, but we don't really expect you to get good grades." Y/n slapped Chase's arm and he continued. "I'm engineered to be the smartest person on the planet, and I just got an A-minus. I've been relegated to the huddled, unwashed masses of minuses, like you!" The Dooley next to him scoffed.
"Oh, you're supposed to be the smartest person? Last time I checked, I have super smarts and all A's." Chase's eyes widened and took her paper. He pouted, realizing she was right but soon gave her a smile in congratulations.
"Chase," Bree interrupted the moment between the two, "I know this must be hard for you. But look at the bright side! Seeing you fall flat on your face is really fun for us!" The four laughed as the boy huffed.
"I have to find a way to reclaim my superiority."
"Well, you could sign up for the Student of the Semester competition." Loe pointed out.
"What's that?"
"Every semester," Y/n butted in to explain, "kids compete to see who can improve the school the most. Whoever gets the most votes wins free pencils, a bumper sticker, and a cheesy picture of themself in the hallway. Not to brag, but mom has two bumper stickers. And I think we all can figure out who won those."
"And that cheesy picture will show everyone that my brilliance reigns supreme! I am so gonna win!"
"I call your free pencils! No, wait, I'll take the cheesy picture. Gosh, they both sound so good!" Adam had a look of wonder as he tried to decide which one of Chase's prizes he was gonna get.
