Warnings: plane crash
———————————————

Shutting the oven closed, Y/n proceeded to set a timer to five minutes. She reached into a drawer to grab some utensils and went over to the dinner table, placing them on the sides of each plate.

Clay would be there any minute, so she hurried when lighting the candles, almost burning her finger in the process.

They hadn't seen each other in almost two weeks. Clay had been visiting his family in Florida, but Y/n hadn't been able to accompany him like she usually would given the fact that she had some work commitments that she couldn't miss out on.

Hearing her phone ring from the kitchen, Y/n quickly adjusted one of the napkins before walking into the other room, answering the phone with a smile as she saw the caller ID.

"Hey, babe," she greeted excitedly, her face falling ever so slightly when she heard the loud noise in the background of his call. "Wait, are you still on the plane? I thought you landed ages ago."

Some commotion could be heard on his end. "Clay?" she pressed.

"Y/n." The way he said her name, it sounded like a statement. His voice sounded different than normal — it wasn't too obvious, but it was obvious enough for Y/n to know that something was going on.

"Are you okay? You sound worried," she said, glancing over her shoulder to look at the oven timer swiftly.

"Uh," hesitated Clay, "I—I don't know, but—" a loud crashing sound cut him off.

A jolt went through Y/n'a body at the sound, and she went wide eyed with an expression mixed with surprise and worry. "Clay? What was that?"

A few seconds went by before he made a move to answer. "Something's wrong with the plane," he said breathlessly. "Really wrong."

Y/n's heart dropped, and she started being able to feel her heartbeat in her throat as she gulped nervously.

"W—What's wrong it?" She prayed that he was only going to tell her that they were behind schedule, that he would be late and that what she had heard simply had been turbulence.

"We don't know," said Clay. His voice grew more faint towards the end of his answer as if he pulled away from his phone for a bit. "The crew won't tell us what's wrong, I—they...they just told us to stay calm."

"Shit," breathed Y/n. She ran a nervous hand through her hair, trying her best not to let her mind trail to analyze the possible outcomes of his situation.

All of the sudden a sound could be heard from the other side of the line, followed by a sound from Clay's throat.

"What! What is it?" panicked Y/n. She heard him mumble a low 'fuck'.

"That was the oxygen masks dropping down," he told her.

Y/n held back a sob. The idea of maybe losing the one person she loved the most frightened her more than anything, but she couldn't show it too much. Right now, she needed to be the calmer one of the two. She needed to comfort Clay — to make him believe that things might not have been as terminal as they both feared.
