Ann rolled her eyes as she watched Valerie open the front door and place her hands on her hips. "Are you serious right now?" Valerie asked. "How in the hell did you land a guy like Tom Hiddleston?" she questioned rudely.
"Val, I am not dignifying that question with a response," Ann answered sternly. She felt Tom put a protective arm around her waist as they stood on the front porch. "Are you going to let us in?"
"Not until you tell me how you landed an actor!" Val exclaimed, her eyes wide as she gestured towards Tom. She looked at Tom with her eyes practically shaped like hearts.
Meanwhile Tom stood there stoically, making sure Ann was tight against his side, while he held the cooler in his other hand. Well, Ann wasn't lying when she told me about her.
"Valerie Gail! Let your sister and her boyfriend in the house right now!" Sarah called. She stood on the other side of the screen door with her arms crossed over her chest.
Valerie sighed and rolled her eyes heavily before she stepped out of Ann and Tom's way to allow them inside the house. "Fine," she grumbled.
Ann smiled at her mother and felt Tom loosen her grip so they could walk inside. She quickly gave her mom a hug and kissed her cheek. "Hi mom. I'm sorry for bringing drama with us."
"Do not be sorry for your sister's behavior," Sarah retorted quickly as she embraced Ann tightly in her arms. "We both knew she would cause a ruckus." She let go of Ann and turned to greet Tom. "It is so nice to finally meet you," she said happily.
Tom smiled and reached out to shake Sarah's hand, only to be pulled into a hug. "It's nice to meet you too," he said with a laugh.
Sarah let Tom out of her embrace and smiled up at him. "I never got to thank you in person, for what you did for my Ann. I was surprised to hear just who had helped her, but I'm glad for it. Thank you Tom."
A blush filled Tom's cheeks at the praise. "I only did what any other man should have done. Nothing more. I just didn't bank on getting so attached," he replied as he looked past Sarah, at Ann, who was now blushing a bright shade of peach.
"My daughter is lucky to have you in her life," Sarah continued, then looked down at the cooler. "Does that need to go in the fridge? What did you two bring with you?"
"It's spaghetti salad, mom." Ann answered. "We kept it on ice, along with some soda, for the drive here."
Sarah quickly took the cooler from Tom's grasp and placed it on the counter before she opened it. "We best get it into the fridge then."
Ann walked around the kitchen island and into Tom's waiting embrace. She leaned back against Tom's chest while she watched her mother scamper around the kitchen. "Who all is coming to the event this year? I know it's Uncle Josh's turn to bring the fireworks."
"Josh will be here along with his wife and their little girl Tina. Val, of course," Sarah answered. "I think your father is going to try and make it this year, but you know how busy he can get sometimes with his work. Other than that, I think it's just Grace and Mike with the new little guy."
"They're coming?" Ann asked, her voice excited, making Sarah chuckle.
"Unless something changes, they should be here later today or tomorrow morning," Sarah replied. "You two go on and relax. I know a few hour drive isn't too far, but it's tiring. Pick whatever bedroom you would like to share."
