We've escaped, but not without cost.

Myra is left behind. And the Princess Valarie as well.

Is it wrong that I am relieved?

Myra was my captor, the leader of this little band of rebels, at least, operating within the Midnight Star and spying while pretending to be a servant just like me. Without her, I might have a chance of breaking away from them. I don't want a part in a rebellion. I don't want my, or my brother's, life put on the line.

And the Princess isn't stable. She plays with lives, including my own, and smiles while doing it. She's not safe to be around, ever. Not even out of her little prison. Especially not out of her prison, because she's still trapped where it truly counts. In her own mind.

Eva, Eva, Eva-

They'll be fine. I have to believe it. Valarie's a Princess. They wouldn't dare hurt her. And Myra...well, won't they keep her for information?
Yes, the little voice in the recesses of my mind whispers, But what about after they've gotten all they can?

I don't want to think about that.

"Single file." The rebel boy's voice echoes. "This is not the end. We'll get her back."

Not them. Her.

But which one? Myra or Valarie?

The spy or the Princess that would tip the revolution in their favor?

I already know the answer to that.

Valarie, though insane, is far more valuable. They don't want another ruler. They want a figurehead.

I wish to tell him that with Valarie, it's not going to be that easy, but then I realize he's probably figured that out for himself.

Someone shoves me forward, and I stumble. It's Kassidy, her grin wicked in the darkness.

I have traded one prison for another.
