A knock on the door.
I'm nervous, suddenly, standing here in the middle of the night. Standing in front of Marcia's house with Kassidy and the boy and a traitor. Standing here, like we expect them to help us.
One thought loops repeatedly in my mind- How do they know about my best friend?
Kassidy reaches up to knock again.
I don't dare voice the question. Don't dare ask how they know Marcia, and Aaron, and Jasper, the man who is like a father to me. I don't dare pretend to understand their reasoning. Don't dare to pretend I am one of them.
Because I'm not.
Another knock. Impatient this time.
Nothing.
"Jasper!" She calls finally, voice soft. "It's Kassidy!"
"Kassidy?" A voice filters through the wood. I flinch back in surprise. How does Kassidy know Jasper? "Who's with you?"
After shooting a doubtful look at Lynn and myself, Kassidy answers, "Friends."
The door swings open.
Kassidy hurries us, muddy and exhausted, into their house without a thought. It's all so familiar. The worn sofa. The working boots propped by the front of the door. Marcia's books on the windowsill.
What is not familiar is the four frightened faces gazing up at us.
"I see we have a lot of explaining to do." Kassidy says grimly.
