With that WONDERFUL cliffhanger, of course I can't let you figure out what happened to Val. And Renee......well, she's not the right character for this.

Please welcome Marcia and her brother, Aaron. Two ordinary citizens, ones that haven't had ANY association with Val.

Marcia does know Renee, but that isn't relevant.......

I promise I won't kill Marcia or Aaron. If you forgive me for this chapter.

If you don't, well.....

I still won't kill them.

Maybe.

Probably.

Possibly.

"AARON!" I call, my voice loud and 'Annoying', according to my little brother. "Get UP here!"

"Later." He calls back smugly. He thinks that when Mother leaves me in charge, he can do anything he wants.

I wish he were wrong. I'm not at all convincing.

Sighing, I slip a headband into my wild, untamed curls and grab Aaron's hand-carved turtle and duck toys. Their eyes stare up at me blankly, and I swing them back and forth as I run down the steps. "AARON!" I call again, but I'm greeted with unnatural silence. I freeze, then softly descend, tip-toeing.

"Aaron?" I whisper hesitantly. Again, nothing.

"Aaron Aaron Aaron Aaron." I repeat it, but only to myself. I say it so quietly I don't expect him to hear.

But he answers, anyway. "Mare. Come here. Now."

I never listen to Aaron's orders, but now, something has me hurrying down to him. His face is shocked, a little numb.

Where is his energetic, normally so irritating self?

"Marcia. She....tried....the king....she tried to assassinate the king..."

The words echo in my ears.

Valarie tried. She tried, and she failed.

Renee was wrong.

She failed.
