I'm the first allowed in Princess Valarie's room since the trial, to clean and take care of her. No one knows what to make of her outburst during the convicted's sentencing.
They say that the cuts she made will leave scars.
I unlock the door, tentatively, afraid of what I'll find. Princess Valarie is crumpled on the floor, curled into a ball. She lifts her head to stare at me with dead, empty eyes.
"Eva." She says softly, before her eyes focus. "You aren't Eva, are you? Eva is dead."
"Yes." I tell her, not moving, my hand still on the door. "Eva won't hurt you again, Princess."
But she isn't listening, not really. "The walls are bleeding." She says suddenly. Her voice gives me chills. "Can you see it too? There is blood everywhere and it will not leave. This castle is drowning in Eva's blood."
"Princess-" I start, but she lifts a hand to silence me. Her fingernails have dried blood underneath them.
"I am going to kill him, you know. I am going to avenge her. The King will die."
And suddenly I realize I have every reason to be very, very afraid of the Princess.
