One foot in front of the other.
That's the only way I can keep moving, when I think of what is to come. Just another step. And another, and another, and another.
Just a single step. That's not so hard, is it?
Unless each step leads you closer to the same room that your best friend died in. Unless each step leads you to a trial that you know will be in no way fair.
Just another step.
As soon as I left the room, I was surrounded by guards. They pressed into me. Jostled me. Threatened me.
I said nothing, just as I say nothing now.
I am not a puppet any longer.
Just another step.
The wall is cool, and as I trail my fingertips along it, I smile. Because there is blood here. And I am the only one who sees.
The others will drown in it. I am the only one who knows to swim.
Just another step.
"We're here, Princess." One of the guards says, spitting my title out like it personally offends him. I smile sweetly.
And then they throw open the doors.
