My name is Percy Jackson.
I'm 28 years old. Until a few months ago, I thought we were the only heroes in this world.
Am I a hero?
Yeah. You could say that.
I've saved the world countless times since I was 12, when I found out my dad is Poseidon, the Greek god of the sea. Yeah, you heard me right. My dad is a Greek god, like from the ancient myths. I've had my fair share of tragedy and quests, but things had been unnaturally quiet the past couple of months. Years, even. I'd managed to live a normal life. Well, as normal as it gets for a demigod. I got a job as the sword fighting instructor at Camp Half-Blood, and my fiancée, Annabeth, was designing all sorts of buildings, including for the gods on Olympus. We were meant to be getting married soon but things got sort of interrupted when our lives went crazy again. I guess it had been leading towards it for months, but things really started going bad last September, when I met a boy named Peter Parker. The pizza restaurant was bright and empty apart from the table in the middle where a group of kids from 12 to 19 were congregated, including my younger sister Estelle, and Zephyr, the Hermes kid I was meant to be keeping an eye on because he kept disappearing from Camp.
I walked in, calling "Z, Estelle, I've been looking all over for you!"
"Sorry, sir." Zephyr looked down at the ground and made me feel bad. He didn't seem to be doing anything wrong.
"Estelle, can you go wait in the car?"
"But - "
"Estelle, I really do try my hardest to keep you out of danger. I just - I'm just trying to protect you."
"I know." Estelle now wore the same expression of shame that Zephyr was "Bye guys." She gave a small wave, then turned to Zephyr "You were really brave, you know." She stood on her tiptoes and kissed him on his cheek, then skipped towards the car parked outside.
I was frozen for a while - I didn't really know how to respond to that "You... And my sister..."
Zephyr blushed a deep red "We - we're just friends."
I chuckled "Y'know, Z, I used to say that about a girl I knew."
"What happened?"
I smiled a blissful grin, picturing Annabeth's beautiful face "We're getting married next month."
A boy around 19 interrupted "Z, who's this?"
Zephyr seemed to have forgotten they were there "Oh, um, this is... My mentor?" He didn't seem to know quite what to call me "He works at the camp I go to."
The boy smiled politely "Hi, I'm Luke."
I stared at him, startled. He was tall and athletic with short-cropped sandy blonde hair, blue eyes, and a mischievous smile. Basically, he looked exactly like Luke Castellan when I'd first met him, over 15 years ago. All except the scar he got from Ladon, the dragon that guarded the Garden of the Hesperides. "Luke?"
"Well, Lucas, but..." He saw my expression "Something wrong?"
I shook away the thought. Even if Luke had chosen to be reborn, this couldn't be him... Right? "It's - it's nothing. You just... Remind me of someone I used to know."
"I - I'm sorry I disobeyed you - sir." Zephyr said timidly "But they - my friends needed help, and I'm always gonna help my friends, and - "
I knew I could never stay mad at him. Especially when he was so much like me when I was 12. "Oh, it's fine Z. You shouldn't really have done it, but..." I sighed "You remind me of me when I was your age. You do what you have to do to protect your friends, no matter what the rules say."
"A - Am I in trouble?"
I sighed again "Just head back to Camp. But if you ever include my sister in your schemes again, I will tell - " I paused, glancing at the other, realising I couldn't give away that we were demigods by calling Chiron by his name "the Camp Director, ok?"
Zephyr nodded and scurried off.
I turned to the others and tried for an innocent smile "Sorry about that. I'm meant to be keeping him out of trouble, but I'm not doing a very good job of it. Anyway, I don't think we've been properly introduced. Hi, I'm Percy Jackson.""So you're the mysterious mentor Zephyr cares so much about making proud." The boy, Lucas, said.
I was taken back. Zephyr was the type of person who did what he wanted and didn't care what others thought. It never even occured to me that he would ever want to make someone proud, even his dad Hermes ."Yeah, I... I guess I am. And you're the friends he keeps sneaking away to visit?"
Lucas smiled "We would have died quite a few times without him."
The girl who had been reading a book up until now added "Your sister, too."
I nodded and turned to leave, but my gaze lingered on Lucas and the 2 other girls sat by him. Something seemed... different about them. "Well, it's good to know that Z has such good friends."
It was only after I left that I realised that I recognised one of the boys who'd been sat at the table. I'd been so distracted by Lucas looking like my old enemy Luke that I hadn't even noticed that there had been something familiar about the other boy. It took me a while to place him, but eventually I figured out where I knew him from. His face had been plastered all over the news the past few weeks. Even I recognised him, and I hardly watch the news. But that was one thing I couldn't have forgotten.
Because that boy was Spider-Man.
