Percy's P.O.V

I drove one of the Camp vans down the roads of New York, towards the abandoned Avengers Tower, with Annabeth sat on the seat beside me and the others in the back. Peter, Ned, MJ, and Amy-Rose had explained it all to me, and then Lucas, Pippa, Anya and Zephyr had insisted on coming too as they were their friends. I don't know how Peter and the new demigod, Amy-Rose, convinced me to do this, but somehow they managed.

I stopped outside of the Tower and looked at the looming building, then glanced at Annabeth.

"How are we going to play this? Sneaky? I could try and pick the lock,"

"Or I could just kick the door down." I suggested.

"Ever the master of stealth, Seaweed Brain."

MJ's P.O.V

We searched the tower from top to bottom until Percy's fiancé, Annabeth, noticed a door to a cupboard. I didn't know what stood out about it until she pointed at the marks on the floor.

"Something was in front of this door, a bookcase or something, until very recently," Annabeth explained "And why would they need to put something in front of a door if not to hide whatever's on the other side."

Percy looked inside the small cupboard and came out with a box of files "It was empty except for this."

"Weird that they would have left these files behind..." Annabeth mused.

"They were behind a bookcase - maybe they just forgot about them." Peter half-heartedly suggested, but Annabeth was right - it was strange.

I picked up one of the files and my heart stopped. It was a personnel file for Captain Marvel.

The others reached for other files, but I silently sat down and stared at the first page of the file. Faintly, I heard Peter say something to me about the file he had, about the Tesseract giving Captain Marvel her powers and its uses as an energy source, but I barely heard him. Everything sounded muffled to me and I couldn't focus on anything except those 2 words, swimming in the sea of information of Captain Marvel's file.

Carol Danvers.

Captain Marvel's real name was Carol Danvers.

The only thing I knew about my mum was that her name was Carol Danvers.

It hit me like a 10 tonne hammer.

Captain Marvel was my mum.

Peter looked at me concerned, asking me what was wrong but I just looked at him for what felt like an hour until I finally said, loud enough for everyone to hear "My mum's Captain Marvel."

Ned was the first one to break the silence, albeit rather awkwardly "Well, that - that sort of makes sense, I guess. I mean, Fury knew Captain Marvel, before the Avengers were even created, and it explains where your powers come from - they must have been handed down genetically."

I looked down at my hands again. I had always guessed that my mum was an ex-SHIELD agent who'd died when I was young, and Fury just never talked about her. I never imagined that she'd been a superhero.

For the past day, I had been terrified of my new powers, fearing that I didn't know how to control them and could accidentally use them, and I didn't know where they had come from, but now I thought of them with a sense of comfort. They were no longer something scary, or uncontrollable. They were the only connection I had to my mum.

Percy's P.O.V

Ned, Peter and MJ started discussing her powers but I was more distracted by what I'd just found. The file I'd randomly selected was Financial Records, because of course it was. I'll tell you something right now that might save your life later on - never read financial records. They are so boring.

I was almost falling asleep while reading the file when I saw 2 words that made me shoot awake.

"Hey, Wise Girl." I called, handing her the file.

Immediately, she saw what I'd spotted. As far back as 2010, one of the main benefactors of SHIELD, and subsequently the Avengers, was Triumvirate Holdings. Aka, the evil immortal Roman emperors who tried  to take over the world 13 years ago and who had killed Jason Grace.

I barely had time to comprehend what this meant when something flew through the air and a knife hit the sleeve of my jacket, just missing my shoulder and pinning me against the wall. I looked up to see a wiry boy, maybe 18 but with a face that looked younger, with glossy black hair and a variety of weapons on his belt, a throwing knife in his hand.

"Wha - Who are you?" I stammered.

"My name is Owen." He snarled "Owen Nakamura. You killed my brother." He slowly pulled a sword from his belt "And now I'm going to kill you."
