CASE #010

"Soujirou, hide your brother! They're coming!"

"Mum, what's happening?" the little redhead blinked in confusion as his mother ushered him to the basement of their manor. His elder brother came along to hide with him.

"Mum, stay safe!" the elder one, whom the woman called Soujirou, told her mother. Soujirou was older than his little brother, Seijuurou by 2 years.

"I will. Take care of Seijuurou and yourself." The woman nodded and ran out.

"Sou-nii, what's happening? Why is Mum crying and where's Dad?" Seijuurou tugged his brother's sleeve.

Soujirou took a deep breath and turned to his brother. "We're under attack, Sei. You've got to listen to me and stay close, understand?"

Seijuurou frowned. "What attack?"

"Ghouls."

"But Mum is..."

Soujirou hugged his brother. "You'll be safe. We'll save you."

"Soujirou, Seijuurou!" a male voice called out. They turned their heads. "RUN!"

It went like slow motion for Seijuurou. A gust of wind blocked his father off his feet and his head hit the wall of the narrow pathway of the basement. Something black wrapped around his legs and he screamed out in agony. Soujirou took his hand and they were running. Another black figure, like wizards wearing black robes without faces, without eyes, heads and even a proper set of legs, pulled Soujirou away.

Seijuurou yelled. He held tight.

Soujirou kicked his brother away.

"Live!"

I woke up with a start. I was panting and sweat formed on my forehead, neck and back. Biting my lower lip, I shut my eyes and tried to calm down, reminding myself it was just an old dream. Exhaling sharply, I pulled my body upright and looked around. We were in Chief's office. Mikage was still sleeping and Chief is probably in another room. The office was dark but there was a horizon of reddish orange lining from the outside, indicating that the sun is about to rise from its deep slumber.

I didn't bother to wake Mikage up, considering how many hours he'd spent in front of the computer last night, trying to track Heiwayuki. My mind wandered back to my dream. I wonder why it came back after so many years. It was around 4 or 5 years before. It has always been haunting me for about two years but when I learned to fight back, I stopped dreaming about that incident.

I stood from the couch and went to the window, gazing at the city. "Why didn't you wake me up, Seijuurou?" Mikage spoke. I turned to him.

"Thought you were tired after staying up so late in front of the computer." I replied.

Mikage rubbed his eyes with the back of his palms and smiled. "Let's search again. I'm sure your inside's burning too." he said and got out of the room.

"You rest first. I'll go get some fresh air." I replied and strode out of the room. At the back of the station, Chief, Mikage and I planted a garden for leisure use. I sat on the bench provided and spaced out. Suddenly my phone rang.

    "Hello," I answered the call.

    "A-akashi-kun!" a girl's voice said.

"Oh, Niko, what's it?" I asked, totally not in the mood to flirt.
