The team had been at the hospital for a few hours, and Emily hadn't been out of surgery yet. They waited in the lobby, all sleeping as it was around 7:00 a.m. now. Hardly anyone else was in the bland gray waiting room, it was only them.
The team continued to sleep for another few minutes, until around 7:30 a.m. Emily was out of surgery, but she hadn't been able to have any visitors. The news couldn't be brought to the team until her survival chances were better, or when her chances of survival were dwindling.
Everyone awoke as soon as they heard the doors open, a nurse walking out. Reid yawned, but everyone was immediately alert. "Is she ok?" JJ asked as soon as the nurse was within earshot.
"She should be ok. If you guys would like to see her now, she's awake. The surgery went successfully. The bullet is removed. I can only let a few of you in at-"
Before the nurse could even finish, everyone rushed to Prentiss's room, seeing her propped up against the hospital bed in her hospital gown. The nurse shrugged. It wasn't like anything could go wrong. The room was big enough for all of them, so she figured it was fine.
Emily started speaking as soon as everyone was in the room. "Elle Greenaway, you knew her, she's the unsub. I don't know everything that happened with her but-"
Everyone's worst fears were confirmed. They had been hoping that maybe it hadn't been Elle that wrote the message on the wall. Was Elle really capable of this? Was it just someone framing her? The team knew deep down that none of these things were true. Elle was the unsub.
"Prentiss, slow down. What happened?" Hotch inquired at Emily.
"Can we maybe not talk about the case right now? Emily just got shot by someone who we all used to trust with our lives, she's in the hospital, recovering, and now all we are talking about is the case. She almost died, and we are talking about the case?" JJ was angry at Hotch. Her girlfriend had been shot and the team decided to not comfort Emily, but make her relive it.
"JJ, I'm fine. I'm alive. Elle came into my house and the guards outside got shot. I woke up when I heard those, but she had killed all three in a matter of seconds. I ran to get my gun, but Elle had already shot the three other men in my kitchen. I tried to get my gun, but it was locked up in my nightstand. Then she pointed her gun at me and started talking."
Spencer paused, before speaking. "Are you sure it was her? I mean, you've never even seen her-"
"Pretty Boy, I know this isn't the news you want to be hearing, but Prentiss has seen her case file. She knows what Elle looks like, why she was fired, and exactly what happened to her," Morgan said to Reid. It didn't offer any help whatsoever to Reid.
"Sorry for not wanting to believe someone who used to be one of my closest friends is a psychopath who shot five women, including another of my closest friends. Elle just doesn't seem like the type who would do this-"
Emily interjected, "She told me her name. She said her name was Elle, and when I called her Greenway, she got angry and said not to use her agent name. Spencer, I'm sorry, but it's her. I read her case file. When Elle was shot, the Fisher King wrote rules on the wall. That's what she did to me. And then she left."
Spencer grew quiet. He didn't want to think it was Elle. But he trusted Prentiss.
"Who even is this Elle?" Asked Rossi, clueless to what they were even talking about. He knew nothing about Elle.
"She was on the team. The Fisher King shot Elle after hacking my computer pretending to be someone from my online game. Elle was traumatized, and in her last case, she shot an unsub who raped women on a college campus without probable cause. Hotch fired her." Garcia spoke up for the first time that they had been in the room. She directed her eyes toward Hotch in a subtle way, not letting her anger show.
The room quieted down as soon as Garcia finished talking. The once loud room was filled with only the sound of Emily's beeping monitor. "I didn't get to finish telling you what happened," Emily said quietly.
"After that, Elle started ranting about you, Hotch. She only called you Hotchner. She said that he was doing this because of Gideon, but Gideon left almost two years ago. I know she blames you, Hotch, but there's something more that's bothering her. She isn't doing this just to get back at you. She's doing this for someone on this team. We just don't know who."
"Is there anything else you remember, Prentiss?" Asked Hotch.
"Actually, yes. She wouldn't let me negotiate. Every time I tried to talk to her, she said she knew the tricks they taught. She said she used to be a profiler, and that I can't try to negotiate. She tried painting you in a bad light, saying you let her get shot. I don't know what went down with you, but I know that she's mad, or she has a bigger plan."
"Emily, I'm sorry that happened. Are you sure you're ok?" JJ asked, concerned.
"JJ, I'm alive. Right now, I think that's enough. I didn't think I would even have the luxury of being alive a few hours ago." Emily directed her attention towards Hotch. "It's not your fault I got shot. If Elle calls, and I suspect she will, she'll make you feel bad. It's not your fault, Hotch."
Hotch's phone rang out, and he picked it up from his pocket. "This is Agent Aaron Hotchner with the Behavioral Analysis Unit, is everything alright-" Hotch's voice trailed off as the person on the other line spoke. "Alright, I'll bring the team as soon as I can.
Hotch put his phone into his back pocket. "We have another victim."
