"Me," Elle said. It was a single word but it meant everything. Because Elle was always going to be a part of who Spencer was. Because now as she said that simple word, he understood that this was Elle's plan all along.
Reid changed his tone immediately. "Elle, you don't want to do that. Everything's ok, Elle. It's all going to be ok, and there are better ways to end this twisted vengeance that you have." It was hard to get through to Elle because she knew what she had done. Elle was smart enough to know that she was only getting out of this situation in one of two ways. She was going to jail or she was going to die. This was her final choice.
"I just want to be happy again. I want to be the person I'm not. It's time for me to start owning up to what I've done and stop blaming the life I never had. Hurting people, that's a choice, and that's one I'm done making. There's one way out. I wish I could have done better. I wish I could have been the person I was. Everyone dies. And I know that right now is my time."
"Elle, but I love you! We need you." Spencer's fear rose. How was he supposed to stop her? A tear rolled down his cheek. "Elle, please, there are other ways. You can still find a way to be happy."
"You don't need me. You were willing to let me go three years ago. You never planned on seeing me again then. So it'll be like that. Just a bit longer. I guess it'll be forever. I need you to be strong. I need you to be the happiness I never got to have. We all wish for a lot of things in life. You want to know my wish? My wish is that I'm not here anymore. It's what I want. And if you've learned anything in the time I've known you is that I try my best to get what I want. And I'm sorry I couldn't be stronger."
Spencer wanted to talk, but he was quiet. He wanted to help her, but he couldn't. She needed him to help save her. In a more real way, he needed her to save him. He needed Elle to be there for him because he hadn't been there for her. And he realized his mistake when it was too late for her to save herself.
"I'm just a person who is half of herself. Just a serial killer who killed people because she just couldn't quite get over her past. And don't interject because it's worse when people lie and say they care."
Spencer was confused. "Please, Elle. If they don't need you, know that I do. You should know that I care." It was at this moment he felt completely helpless for the first time. He couldn't save her.
"Can you just tell them that I cared? I want them to know that I cared. I'm damaged, hurt, and sometimes I just look in the mirror and ask myself what happened to me? Why can all these people be happy when I'm not. It's because something was also missing. The team. And now there are people that are dead and that? That's on me. I did that! So tell them that I cared but I can't anymore."
Elle knew something was always missing from her when she left. Sometimes you see everything you want and it's right there in front of you. And so maybe she could see them all again if she became the person she always hated most. What if used the team to justify the harm she'd do? Because it's all easy when it's not your fault.
"I wanted to be happy. I don't know why I thought this twisted vengeance would get me there because it didn't. I feel more empty than I already did. But maybe being happy isn't the goal in life. Maybe it's to just have one really happy moment before you hurt someone. And I guess I had my really happy moment, and then I hurt a lot of people. And so maybe I did what I wanted for a while but then I ended up here. And if time travel worked I would have kept everything until the end.
"I wish I could have been a little stronger. But I wasn't. And since time travel isn't real, I have to keep it all and that means that I have to say goodbye to this lifetime and hope that the world works out where I go next. And maybe when I'm gone, I'll forget, but I am sorry you never will. I'm sorry you didn't get a choice.
"And I'm still angry and I'll never forgive you. I might let it go but I'll never think it was ok. And you know that I'm going to go out with a bang. Tell Emily she'll be better than I ever could be. I'm sorry but not happy and not willing to let anyone else win. This is how I make sure I go the way I want. If I die, I wanna be me."
Spencer had one last chance to convince Elle to stay. How could he? "Elle-"
"No, no, no. The only way I'm leaving here is when I'm dead. That's the only place that I have left to go. I'm sorry. I told the women I killed I would avenge them. Look at me now, I'm murdering the one who murdered them. That person just happens to be myself. I'm sorry."
"No!" Spencer screamed. "Elle, no!" He didn't know what to say because there wasn't anything he could. "There's more ways out.
Elle picked up the gun and held it to her head. She unlocked it out of safety. Then Elle closed her eyes, shutting out the world again. "Bang," she whispered. And then the gun went off.
Author's Note:
I know that people are going to get mad that I did this. But I think that this was the way I wanted Elle's storyline to end. I hope it didn't disappoint you too much with the long wait, I just wanted to make sure I got this chapter right. We only have a few chapters left!
