And so is the Golden City blackened

With each step you take in my Hall.

Marvel at perfection, for it is fleeting.

You have brought Sin to Heaven

And doom upon all the world.

-Threnodies 8:13

Denerim stood as Ferelden's capital, and was deserving of such a title. The city was large, the buildings larger, and resembled a sea of stars in the night when all the lights flickered on.

It was also the center of much of the nation's crime and poverty, as these things usually went.

The leather of Mag's jacket creaked as she pulled it closer to her lithe frame, making herself small as possible to squeeze past the protestors grouped outside the Alienage walls.

Justice for Knife Ears!

The Walls can't hold us forever!

Free Mages and Elves alike!

Their signs hovered above their heads, loud and imposing, one of them knocking the tip of Mag's pointed ear as she slipped between people, muttering a slew of 'excuse me's, and 'pardon me's.

"Watch yourself," Shianni grinned as she greeted Mag at the gates, pulling her inside. Mag stumbled, but elves had a certain grace that kept them grounded- like cats, always landing on their feet. "Those big ears are gonna get lopped off one day."

Mag laughed, though toyed with the ear that was smacked.

They're big, I get it, why must you always remind me?

Shianni's red hair was cropped short, bohemian skirt flowing as the two women made their way down the cracked streets.

"Oh, I snagged some of these on my way home from work," Mag pulled a cookie from her pocket, blowing it off gently before handing it to her cousin. "Grabbed some for Soris too. It's his big day tomorrow, I figured he might enjoy a treat or two."

Her smile was smug, though Shianni's was more so, biting into her snack.

"From what I hear, he's not the only one with a big day tomorrow."

A slight crease formed between Mag's brows.

"Well, his fiancee's too, obviously."

Shianni shrugged, popping the rest of the cookie into her mouth.

Not talking, huh?

"We'll see."

Mag eyed her, but said nothing more, instead making her way home.

Down the bridge from the gates, make a right, around the Tree, and straight down till the road stops.

"I'll see you same time tomorrow, or do you have a date with that girl from the bakery?" Mag asked, Shianni feigning a look of mock offense.

"The fact that you think I'd choose any girl over the ensurement of your safety is rather insulting, dear cousin," she smiled halfway through her spew. "But, alas, if all goes well tomorrow, you won't need me to walk you home anymore."

Mag's brows furrowed tighter this time around.

"Shianni-"

"I gotta go! Be up bright and early tomorrow, love you!"
