"I never though I'd die alone. Another six months I'll be unknown. Give all my things to all my friends. You'll never step foot in my room again..." -Blink -128

Chapter Eight

I stared at the journal that sat in Chloe's grasp. I couldn't find anything to say to her, so I kept my lips sealed.

"I...I read it all," Chloe said as she, too, looked down at the diary. "Every page."

I didn't know why she was acting this way. Was the diary filled with terrible things? How far did it go back? When was the last time Claire wrote in it? My mind was raping me with questions, but I couldn't find myself to ask any of them out loud.

Chloe then raised her head to gaze at me. Her eyes were filled with water and her lower lip quivered. "Alex, it's heartbreaking," she whispered with a crack in her voice.

"Can I see it?" I whispered back.

She nodded and handed it to me.

I took the diary in my own fingers and mocked Chloe's action by staring down at it. The journal was brown with decorations of white floral designs.

"My parents don't know about it. I wanted you to read it all before I showed it to them," Chloe said in a louder tone.

I snapped my head back up to her. She hadn't told her parents about it?! Wouldn't they like to know? I was real shocked she told me before them.

"I mean...it's your choice, Alex. You don't have to read it if you don't want."

Chloe obviously wasn't on the same page as me. I did want to read it, I was just still set on the surprise that she showed it to me first.

"You haven't told your parents yet?"

Chloe sighed. "No. I'm afraid they'll take it or something. I know they will be real protective over it. Like, if they knew about it, I don't know if they would place it in your possession. I wanted to give you the chance, Alex."

I felt a smile tugging on my lips. It was real kind of her to think of me like she had. "Thanks, Chloe. That's real nice of you."

Her cheeks turned a light pink, making me tilt my head at her. What was she blushing for?

She must have got embarrassed since she turned herself away from me and trotted over to the bed to sit on its edge.

"The diary starts a little over a year ago," she told me. "I kinda skimmed over that part since it was all stuff I knew. Claire and me told each other everything."

I nodded at the back of her hair. Chloe wasn't looking at me, she was staring out the window by the bed. I returned my focus onto the diary. I was real scared and intrigued at the same time. Would it help me figure out her death? Or would it only confuse me more?

"Am I in it?" I asked slowly, keeping my eyes locked on the journal's cover. I figured I was, but the fear of hardly being mentioned pinched me.

Out of the corner of my eyes, I saw Chloe look back at me. "Your name is on every page."

I lifted my head to make eye contact with Chloe. As much as I was excited that I was in it, I was still frightened. I was going to ignore that, though. I needed to read it.

"When does it end?"

Chloe immediately let her head drop down. "The day she died."

I curled my fingers more tightly around the book. Oh God.
