Moving from South Carolina to New York has been a huge switch. I love New York -don't get me wrong, but everything is so different. People constantly bump into you on the street without apologizing, and it's always cold. But there is some good in New York. There's the whole indie and artsy feel, and the night life is amazing. I usually went out a lot, but being a part time bartender at one of the hottest clubs in town, I mostly watched others have fun. Fun right? I sighed again, and wiped down the counter to get ready for the night.
"Well don't you just look excited to be here." My boss Ryan said sarcastically with a smirk.
"Sorry Ry. Just a little bored" I asked him as I took out a few glasses.
He started laughing, "Don't worry, we'll be busy soon enough."
I started sitting out the alcohol and glasses when a group of five guys around my age came in. Ryan immediately went over to greet them as I set the bottles out neatly. After that I set them in alphabetical order, then by size and then color. I suddenly heard a light chuckle and looked up to see a very attractive tanned man with really curly hair and an infectious, bright smile.
"Bored?" He asked and I blushed.
"Yeah, not much to do when we don't open for another," I looked at the clock, "half hour."
"Well I'll be your first customer." He said smiling leaning onto bar with his elbows on the table.
"What will it be..." I trailed off for him to tell me his name.
"Fabrizio. And I would just like a beer."
"Okay Fabrizio." I said I said with a faux Italian accent and fixed his drink.
"Grazie bella." He said winking at me and I giggled.
"Fab, you're such a flirt man." Another attractive looking man with messy dark hair and hazel eyes.
"Shut up Jules."
"Yeah man. You even know her name yet?" A very lanky yet suave looking guy with bright blue eyes said taking a seat on the other side of Fabrizio and lighting a cigarette.
"Of course I do Nick," he said shrugging it off and laughing nervously, "it's..." He trailed off.
"Y/n." I said with a smile.
"Nice name." A guy with a fro said with a kind smile.
"Thanks..." I trailed off.
"Albert." He said smiling.
"Okay. Albert, Nick, Fabrizio, Jules and what's your name?" I asked looking up at the guy who's been quiet this whole time.
"Nikolai." He said shyly and I smiled.
"Nice to meet you." I said with a warm smile and he nodded.
"So...where ya from Y/n? I noticed you have an accent." Jules asked.
"I have an accent?" I asked blushing a bit, embarrassed that they'd -like most people here- would make fun of it.
"Yeah, it's cute." Nick said.
"Hey Nick, who's flirting now?" Fabrizio said punching his shoulder playfully.
I laughed lightly liking these guys already.
"Well..." Jules asked.
"Oh I'm from South Carolina."
"What brings you to New York?" Fabrizio asked.
"I wanted to live somewhere less boring. Plus I got a job as a French translator for L'Oreal here, but I bartend part time." I explained.
"Oh tu parle français? Je parle le langue aussi. Ma mere vient du France. (You speak french? I speak the language too. My mom is from France.)" Nick said.
"C'est genial. Je ne sais pas beaucoup de gens qui parle français. (That is awesome. I don't know many people that speak French.)" I said and the others besides Nikolai looked at us in confusion.
"Hey guys, it's time for you all to get ready." Ryan said walking over to the bar.
"Get ready for what?" I asked.
"We're playing tonight babe." Jules said pointing to the stage.
"See ya later beautiful." Fabrizio said winking and walked onto the stage with the rest of the guys and Ryan smirked at me as I blushed.
"Someone's got a crush." Ryan sang, goofily grinning at me.
"Whatever!" I said blushing harder and laughing along with him.
After a while longer, other customers began to come in and I started with the drinks.
"Um, we're The Strokes and this a little song called 'Last Nite'." Jules said.
They began to play and to my surprise they were amazing. I thought they'd probably be a bunch of posers or something but they were actually really good. Jules' voice was so unique and he seemed so natural on stage. Albert was freaking amazing at guitar and I noticed that he held his guitar a lot like Buddy Holly. When it got to Nick's solo, he bit his lip and played it like it was the easiest thing in the world. In the back, Nikolai was just chilling with Fabrizio, who was playing with so much energy. We made eye contact for a bit before someone waved their hand in my face asking for a drink. I quickly fixed the rude customer's drink and went back to listening to the guys play. As the night wore on, I found myself liking these guys more and more. Finally it was time for them to take a break and they came straight to the bar.
"Hey y'all, what'll it be?" I asked leaning on the bar.
"Five shots and five beers." Nick said.
"Aight" I said getting the drinks and putting it on the bar.
"So what'd ya think?" Fab asked.
"About?..." I trailed off teasingly.
"Our band, mama." Jules asked rolling his eyes playfully.
"You guys are actually really good!"
"You think so?" Nick asked.
"Yeah! I really like y'alls style. It's different." I said smiling.
"Good!" Jules said.
And just like that, my friendship with the guys began.
