Mila ended up sleeping well into the afternoon the next day, relishing the feeling of finally being back in her apartment. She was finally able to change into a new pair of clothes, and when she woke up, she took a nice, long shower.
There was a notice that had been slipped under her door reminding her that she had missed the month's rent, but she had other things to worry about. The first being that she no longer had a phone and needed to get a new one. So, she pulled out her computer and searched online for the cheapest used phone she could find.
It was around three when there was suddenly a knock on her door, startling her. She frowned to herself, wondering if maybe it was her landlord who had come to tell her in person that she needed to pay the rent.
Walking over to the door, she opened it to find Hunter standing on the other side. Immediately, her mood picked up.
"Hi!" she said, smiling brightly at him. She immediately opened the door wider, making room for him to come in. "What are you doing here?"
"Thought you might want an update on the case," he said, stepping inside. "I'm sorry, I would've called but..."
Mila waved a hand, shutting the door as she walked back over to the couch where she left her laptop, Hunter following her.
"Don't worry about it. I'm actually looking for a new phone right now," she said, turning her laptop to show him.
His eyes went over the screen. "You're going to buy it used?"
She shrugged. "They're a lot cheaper than the new ones."
Hunter didn't say anything as his eyes briefly went over the coffee table, no doubt noticing the letter with the large red letters telling her she missed her rent.
"So, what did your Sergeant say?" she asked, getting his attention.
"Well, he believes us about there being a Psychotics member in Division," Hunter told her. "From now on, anything Jason and I investigate is directly reported to only him."
"What about the house we were held in?"
He frowned. "Local authorities were asked to investigate but we can't get a warrant. Apparently, Kane's got some friends in some high places."
"Is your word not enough?" Mila asked him, her eyebrows furrowing.
"Without proof, I can't exactly bring him in. Besides, since he's in a completely different area, Division loses jurisdiction to the local police department," Hunter told her.
Mila frowned. "How are you going to investigate a man who lives eight hours from here, then?"
"We'll continue working the Psychotics case here. Bring in as many dealers as we can, see what they can tell us about Kane," Hunter told her. "We just need more evidence against him before we can bring him in."
"It sounds like you're back at square one," Mila said, her shoulders slumping.
Hunter sighed. "Yeah, pretty much. But, at least now we know who we're after. Bowen's helping us by trying to get a hold of some sealed files under Kane's name. Hopefully, they can shed some light on things."
Mila tilted her head. "Do you think he'll try to come after us again?"
"Now that Jason and I have been reinstated, I doubt it," Hunter said, shaking his head. "I don't think he planned on us getting our jobs back."
