Chapter Fifteen
Journey
Max was awakened from his nightmare by the sound of the laptop pinging in the next room. He rolled from the king size bed and wiped the dream induced sweat from his face. His hands were trembling, and he felt slightly disoriented. Looking around the room, the memory of recent events soon replaced the images of his twin and her lover.
He knew the pinging was a message from Gabriel regarding his request for a meeting with the Cadre. Opening the door of the bedroom, he stepped into the sitting area of the large suite. He sensed the shadow before he saw him, "Saint..." he murmured as he sat down to log onto the dark web.
"You had a nightmare" Saint replied.
Max rolled his eyes and mumbled absently as he concentrated on entering the complicated password that would allow him to open the encrypted email.
"Tul came out to check on you" continued Saint.
"He what?" stammered Max looking up from the keyboard.
"He heard you moaning in your sleep and came out to check on you. He asked me to take away your nightmare, but of course I declined based on our agreement."
"He needs to mind his own business" replied Max as the golden envelope opened to reveal the message:
Ronan will meet you and the others at the Rome cloister 16:00 tonight.
He was pleasantly surprised to see that Ronan would be the one meeting with them, but at the same time, irritated that Vlad was right about the meeting location.
Saint continued, "He was worried about you."
"I doubt that" replied Max sarcastically, "I was most likely disturbing his threesome."
Saint didn't reply, but a knowing smile crept over his face as he stepped back into the shadows.
"I'm going to shower" said Max to the empty room.

After showering Max opened the packages of clothing given to him by Tul. He found a pair of beige cargo pants and a dark green t-shirt made out of the softest cotton/bamboo blend that Max had ever felt. Thinking to himself that the Wamphyri was indeed a conundrum wrapped in an enigma, he caught a glimpse of his refection in the mirror and saw that he was smiling. Quickly wiping the smile from his face, he finished dressing and walked out the door of the bedroom to find the others waiting for him.
Tul and Kate were dressed in fitted black business suits and they looked more like young professionals on their way to an important meeting than immortal assassins on their way to a détente. Knox was also dressed in a suit, only his was dark grey.
Kate watched as Max looked them each up and down while noticing that his eyes lingered just a bit longer on Tul. She suppressed a smile.
Max saw Kate trying not to smile, so he had to let her know that he knew her secret, "There's no way you will get those weapons into the cloister, so you might as well leave them here."
"Weapons?" she asked innocently.
"The Glock in the shoulder holster under your jacket and the" nodding towards Tul, "fixed blade in his boot." Turning to Knox, "as well as the handgun in his ankle holster."
Kate flashed him a bright smile, "says the man with a long blade on his back and two short blades on his waist."
"My weapons only serve to even the playing field. Yours are an open declaration of hostility."
