Chapter Four – Awake
Tul watched as Kate's cheeks regained a healthy glow. When she opened her eyes, he returned her gaze with a glare.
She met his scowl with a crooked smile, "Don't be mad" she replied
"It's not like you to go against my wishes. Why did you disobey and bring me back?" Tul scolded
Sitting up, Kate brushed the fallen snow from her parka. After removing her mittens and toboggan, she fluffed her blue dyed hair and sighed "I didn't want to, but the council made me"
"The council?" questioned Tul as he pulled Kate to a standing position, "Why?"
"They didn't tell me, but Vlad is waiting for us in the hostel at the base of the mountain"
Tul's face registered shock. "Vlad is here?"
Kate widened her eyes and nodded in the affirmative.
Not wanting Kate to sense his anxiety regarding Vlad's presence, he changed the subject by asking, "How do you feel?"
Pinching her still tender yet healing ear tips, she answered, "Good"
"Do you think you can make it down the mountain? It will be full dark soon"
Kate grinned, "I have a surprise for you"
Tul returned the grin and added a sly wink for good measure, "I thought you might"
Huffing in mock indignation, Kate replied, "You promised to stay out of my head"
Reaching out his hand and cupping her cheek affectionately, he countered, "I'm not in your head my love, but I do know you pretty well after 200 years"
Kate smiled tenderly as she placed her hand over his for the briefest of moments before she changed the mood by switching to a mischievous grin and giving him a slight push backwards. She immediately dropped to her knees and began digging through the deep snow to uncover two pairs of snow skis. Plopping backwards onto her butt, she hurried to strap the shorter set of skis to her boots, "do you want to race down?" she questioned.
Tul had always enjoyed Kate's playfulness, it was one of the reasons why she was his favorite thrall and why he had chosen now as the time for his true death leaving all his wealth and belongings to her. Dropping to the ground beside her, he began to strap on the longer skis; racing Kate down the Tibetan mountain would clear his head and give him time to prepare mentally for a meeting with the leader of the Wamphyri nation. It did not bode well that Vlad felt the need to pull him from death, Tul knew that things were about to get bad, but he would deal with whatever it was when he got to the bottom of the mountain, right now he had a race to win and a thrall to lovingly chasten.
Rising from his sitting position, Tul smiled and said, "You're on!" before launching into a full downhill run using all his Wamphyri speed.
Kate looked on in amusement and yelled as loud as she could, "Cheater!"
