Chapter Thirty-OneConfession
Tul found Max in the kitchen leaning against the counter drinking a glass of water, he waited for the slayer to speak, but when he didn't, Tul opened the conversation with, "I'm sorry you had to see that. I know it must be upsetting."
Max sighed and hung his head as he replied, "Just when I start to think of you as just another person, I am reminded again that you are another species all together."
The comment was like a gut punch to Tul, but he did his best to hide the hurt that he knew must surely show on his face before he replied evenly, "we're not so different."
"Your kind considers my kind food. I would say that's different enough" replied Max as he sat the glass on the wooden counter and walked out of the room.

Kate smiled thinly as she grasped Vlad by the elbow and asked, "Can I talk to you a minute?" Nodding his consent, Vlad followed her to the other end of the hallway for the private conversation.
Kate began with a question, "Why did you bring Mauve?"
"You know why" he answered.
"Knox will never agree to it" she countered.
"He might. Things look a lot different from a hospital bed – as you well know."
Kate nodded her agreement, but still she argued, "I was dying. Knox is not."
"I still want to give him the option" Vlad responded, "he will be no use to me otherwise."
Kate sucked in her breath, "You don't mean that."
But Vlad wasn't given time to answer as Saint stepped out of the shadows with a limp Laird in his arms.

Owen watched the group through the scope of his M24 and smiled at the chaos wrought by the single bullet that struck the female wamphyri. Rafe had told him that the bullet jackets made with metal infused with angel magic would be their secret weapon against the creatures – he had been doubtful, but now he was a believer.
He frowned as Max walked through his line of sight – that was a slightly more delicate problem – they couldn't just kill the traitor out right; but he had been tainted by his contact with the creatures; there was no way he would be accepted back into the fold.Owen's thoughts on Max's fate were interrupted by a chirp from the radio positioned at his side followed by Rafe's voice informing to prepare for phase two of their plan, Owen grinned....it was about to get interesting.

Max returned from his brief foray into the kitchen to find that in his absence, an intravenous tube now connected the wamphyri and her thrall. Kazu lay with her head in Lark's lap as the wamphyri stroked her thrall's hair and face gently. It was an intimate scene and it made Max uncomfortable – as if he had interrupted a private moment between lovers. Just as he was turning away, Lark switched her attention to him and said, "would you like me to continue with our story?" glancing at the wall clock, she continued, "we still have an hour or so before the reinforcements arrive."
Tul walked into the room just in time to hear the end of the question as he and Max both echoed, "what reinforcements?"
