I remember when we first talked, how awkward our first interaction was.
I've been sitting at my desk for what felt like hours and I decided I should probably get a little treat for working on the same thing for hours. It is fall and it gets pretty cold, I bundle up by putting on a jacket and scarf. I walk down to the coffee shop near my house and once I open the door, the smell fills with sweet bakery treats and the fresh made coffee. I smiled and walked up to the register and there stood a cashier with a smile on her face.
"Welcome! What can I get for you today?"
"Can I get a Caramel Latte, please?"
"Yes, of course. May I have a name for that order?"
"George."
"Perfect, we'll have that right out for you George." She smiles.
"Thank you."I walk over near the station that you would pick up your drinks at. I looked around and the shop wasn't busy, but it also wasn't empty. There were a lot of people bundled up from the cold weather, waiting for their warm drinks to fill their bodies. I scroll through my phone and try to entertain myself waiting for my drink.
"Carmel Latte for George." A lady called out, I walked up and grabbed my drink. I took a sip and instead of a sweet caramel taste to fill my mouth, I was met with a hot chocolate. I turn around the cup and see the name "Clay'' written on it. Shit, I grabbed the wrong cup. I go back to the station to see my cup there. I go back to grab the correct cup from the counter.
"I see you have my cup there," I turn around to see a tall blonde man standing there with a small smile on his face.
"I'm so sorry I didn't know that it was yours-"
"It's fine," He laughs. "If it's fine we can trade drinks." He looks down at my cup.
"Are you sure? It's a Caramel latte."
"If you're up for the offer, you don't have to."
"No, no. Take it." I hand him the drink. He takes a sip, smacks his lips, then gives a pleased look on his face."These are really good."
"They are, Caramel lattes are my favorite drink to get when I'm here."
"I see why you like them, I should get these more often." Turns the cup over and looks at the name. "So, George." I turn over the cup to see his name.
"So, Clay. What brings you here?"
"I was working some coding for my job. Nothing interesting."
"Coding? I've always been interested in coding."
"Really?"
"I only know a bit, not much."
"Maybe I could teach you sometime."
"That sounds fun. Maybe tomorrow?"
"Tomorrow works, see you later George."I smile and wave and walk out of the coffee shop. I smile as I take another sip of the hot chocolate, then I found myself going to that coffee shop more often.
---
"I always went back, just to see him." I explained. "Sometimes I wouldn't even order a drink I would just go there to talk to him."
"Do you wish that you didn't go there as often?" She asked tapping her pen lightly against the clipboard.
"No, to be honest. I didn't go out much before that, he's the reason I got out of the house or needed a break from work."
"When you go to that coffee shop now, do you think of him?"
"Yes, of course I do. We had so many memories."
"Good or bad?"
"Memories?" She nods her head. "Good, all of them actually at that coffee shop."
"Did you ever wanted to go to the coffee shop without the reason to not see him?"
"Rarely,"
"I see."
"I don't know why I always took time out my day just to see him."
"Maybe because you cared so much about him."
"Maybe."
