(Y/N) slowly opens the door to the stables, letting a small amount of light flood in, but not enough to wake the sleeping Pegasi. One of them, however, lifts its inky black head, a singular patch of white on its muzzle gleaming in the dim glow of the setting moon.
"Hey, boy," (Y/N) whispers, walking over to Hesperos as he stands, and he lets out a gentle snort in greeting. (Y/N) unhooks his stable door, trying to be as quiet as possible before guiding him to the exit.
Hesperos carefully walks outside the stables before stretching his large wings, and their black feathers flutter in the gentle breeze. (Y/N) closes the door before walking up to him and mounting just behind his wing joint. "You ready?" she asks, lightly holding his mane, and he lets out a responsive huff.
'Aye aye.'
(Y/N) chuckles before leaning forward to pat his neck twice, and Hesperos takes off in a canter to the training clearing. The wind whips through (Y/N)'s hair as Hesperos continues to pick up speed, nearing the cliff's edge and jumping off with his wings outstretched. Her stomach starts to drop as they lower, nearly plummeting down to the sandy shore at the base of the cliff.
Right before they crash, Hesperos gives a powerful beat of his wings, redirecting their course from straight down to gliding across the water. The Pegasus' hooves spray up mist as (Y/N) lets out a triumphant whoop, laughing at the refreshing early morning breeze. "Nice save there, H.."
'Save? That was planned.'
(Y/N) looks down at him with a light scoff, "One wrong move and we would have been dead."
Hesperos snorts before increasing his height above the water, and (Y/N) furrows her eyebrows. She lets out a startled yelp as the Pegasus suddenly turns upside-down, and she leans closer to his neck while tightening her grip on his mane and squeezing her legs around his belly to hold on. Her hair is a centimeter away from the water's surface, and she lets out a slightly nervous chuckle, "Okay, okay. You win."
'Thank you.'
"You're very welcome," (Y/N) tells him, hesitantly looking at the rushing water as her head grows heavy, "but can we try our drill now?"
Hesperos doesn't answer apart from maneuvering to fly correctly, and (Y/N) straightens up while loosening the hold on his mane. "All right. We've really gotta work together on this one, okay? We need to be quick." The Pegasus snorts in response, and (Y/N) continues, "Remember: rise, dive, catch. We're gonna try not to let what happened last time happen this time."
Both Hesperos and his rider shudder at the memory of the eels.
"Okay," (Y/N) takes a deep breath, "You ready?"
He lets out a confident whinny in response, and (Y/N) pats his neck, "Let's go!"
With the powerful beats of his wings, Hesperos takes them into the clouds, angling his body perpendicular to the water hundreds of feet below them. (Y/N) lets a smile form on her lips at the view she has of the sunrise, but it falls as their altitude continues to increase. "Easy, there," she tells Hesperos, feeling the air start to thin and noticing his wings begin to falter.
"Hold," she instructs, and Hesperos keeps rising. "Hold!" The Pegasus begins slowing as gravity pulls them down even more, but (Y/N)'s words urge him on.
"And... now!"
(Y/N) brings her legs to press her feet against Hesperos' back, and she lets go of his mane, pushing off and falling backwards through the clouds in a perfect dive. The Pegasus straightens up to hover in the air before closely following her descent. Three hundred feet into the drop, a bird flies in front of his muzzle, and he reels back, neighing angrily.
