End of January, 2019

Seri zipped up her white, thin windbreaker, picked up the keys, and walked out of her apartment, locking the door behind her. A quick run down the stairs, another door to swing open and she was blinded temporarily by the bright January sun. Her sneakers were landing on the asphalt with soft thuds, her pace growing steadily as she found her rhythm. With a quick click of a button on her phone, she turned on the music and adjusted the single AirPod in her ear.

Seri hummed through the tunes of some classic rock as she went through her mental to-do list. Today was the day of the Gala they were preparing for in the past few months. Everything was ready, her dress and shoes waiting for her in the office. Since the event will likely run way past 9pm, she did not need to go to work early in the morning, so she took that opportunity to enjoy the sunny run along the Seawall. It was her favorite place to jog in the city, but it was too busy on weekends, so a Friday morning was too good of a chance to pass.

A group of students in her department was preparing a 15-minute fashion show in collaboration with the theatre and music department, so she retraced the program in her head, making sure she remembered the order and the sequence of the outfits. Satisfied with the plan and feeling ready and giddy at the same time, she quickened her pace as she reached the Seawall and turned towards Science World, deciding to switch her usual route today. With the path relatively vacant, a rare occurrence on a sunny day, she reached and passed Science world in no time, continuing her jog. Her thoughts wandered to the past few weeks and brought her back to the time in high school when she would go out more and more often, hoping that the exercise will help clear her head. Eventually, she realized that jogging actually gave her more time to think and overanalyze, so her plans were futile all along. And just like all these years ago, Seri struggled to keep a certain someone out of her mind.

She took a quick pit-stop at Granville island to get a sip of water and continued her jog towards Kitsilano, enjoying the breeze. A thin layer of perspiration formed on her forehead and a few flyaway hairs stuck to it, tickling her. She wiped her face with a wrist band and checked the pace on her phone app. 4:31 per km. Not bad. She jammed the phone back into the pocket and admired the view of the inlet as she curved the path towards the nicer beach areas.

By the time she reached Spanish banks and turned back, it was almost noon. She checked the clock on her phone absent-mindedly and continued to run, her stomach grumbling, when the phone rang and she took it out again, sighing seeing Shelley's face on the screen.

"Yeah?" Seri clicked on the accept button and pushed the phone back into the pocket, her breath catching slightly at the change of pace.

"What are you doing?" Shelley's voice in the AirPod sounded surprised and Seri snickered.

"Running."

"Oh, I see. Not what I thought when you breathe like that. I assume Darren didn't call you then?"

"No. Why?" Seri frowned. Oh no. Something was wrong with the Gala.

"No panic. Just some change in the schedule, we have to move the group number about 30 minutes ahead in the plan. Can you come a bit earlier? Like, now?"

"I am passing Jericho," Seri switched to a fast walk so she could talk. "It'll take me at least half an hour to get home. Shower. Get dressed. Then drive to work."
