I woke up the next morning, expecting to be in my room at Marcus's mansion. When I woke up in Zach's bed I was uneasy. Until I remembered that we made amends yesterday and that I needed somewhere to stay.
I sat up off the bed and changed my clothes. I didn't want to walk down there in my pajamas.
I walked down the stairs to Zach in the kitchen. He was making what appeared to be..toast and eggs!
I acknowledged his shirtless chest and became nervous. I had never even seen Marcus shirtless and here I was, standing in my ex's kitchen watching him cook breakfast with a bare chest.
He turned around to look at me.
"Morning" Be said as he turned eggs.
"G-good morning.." I said, stuttering.
He chuckled. "What? Never seen a guy shirtless?" He laughed.
"Not in a long time..." I muttered.
He smiled. "I'll go get a shirt." He said as he walked upstairs.
I felt flustered and slightly embarrassed. I tried to calm my face down and relax. By the time he came back, I was relaxed and calm.
The next hour went by in a blur. We ate breakfast and talked. And then our conversation drifted on to the lake behind the house.
"Remember when we would take your boat out on the lake?" I asked, hiding my smile.
"I do. I think about it all the time. You were so scared." Zach answered, adding humor to the conversation.
I laughed quietly. I thought about the first time he took me out there.
It was funny thinking back to that time.
"Want to go out there?" Zach asked from in front of me.
"On the lake?" I asked as I smiled.
"Yeah. I can get the row boat out." He said in his same enthusiastic way.
"Of course." I smiled breathlessly. When we rowed out on to the lake, I was amazed by all the beautiful sights. The trees, the birds, the way the sun shone on the summer leaves. And then I gazed over at Zach who was rowing the boat gently in to the middle of the lake.
"It's beautiful out here.." I said admiringly.
Zach stopped the boat. I barley noticed. I was looking all around me.
"The view is miraculous.!" I exclaimed.
"Indeed it is." Zach said staring at me.
I turned to look at him.
He smiled at me and reached in to his pocket.
"Bread?" I asked curiously.
"To feed the ducks." He said enthusiastically.
I took a piece of bread from his hand and held it out.
"Birds! I have bread for you! Come get it!" I said looking and shouting at the ducks nearby.
I heard Zach laugh.
"You're gonna scare them." He said in a slightly quiet voice.
He came over to me.
"Here." He said taking my hand.
He took both my hand from behind me and showed me how to attract the ducks.
"There we go." He said smiling.
I turned my head to look at him. We were closer than I thought.
"Zach I-.." I tried to make out words.
"Shh.." he said putting a finger to my lip.
He removed hid finger and slowly leaned closer to my face.
I leaned in too. We both shut our eyes.
We felt each others lips touch each other's. It was a moment which felt all to familiar. But this. This felt perfect. I forgot all about Marcus, the wedding, my parents, and the rules. I was just there with Zach.
I felt Zach slowly and gently wrap his arms around me. And without having control of my body, My arms wrapped around him. After what felt like hours, We broke apart from each other. I swear I saw the family of ducks were watching us.
"Zach. I'm engaged..I can't do this." I said sadly.
"Alex..You don't have a moment like that and just ignore it.." Zach responded.
I knew he was right. He was more than right. And I knew it with my whole heart.
"Your right." I whispered.
