Zach was right. I couldn't ignore that moment. It was like fireworks exploding in my heart. Which was why I needed to make a decision. I needed to be responsible for my actions. And make things right.
"Zach, I have to go back." I said confidently.
"Okay. Do what you need to do." He said sympathetically.
"Okay." I whispered.
Zach rowed us back to land and we got out of the boat quickly.
"I need to change and freshen up." I told him walking back in to the house.
"That's fine. There's a shower around the corner and you know where your clothes are." He nodded.
I went to go take a shower and change.
After I was through with that, I put on the same black heels and grabbed my things.
I walked to the door accompanied by Zach.
He opened the door for me and I turned to look at him. "Thank you. In case your wondering, I need to process everything and talk it over. I'll keep in touch." I smiled at him. I didn't want to say that I would be back because I didn't want to hurt him if it was a lie. I gave him a kiss on the cheek.
"Goodbye." I walked out to my car. I heard running behind me. I turned around and before I could comprehend what was happening, Zach was kissing me. It was a romantic and passionate kiss. I broke away from his lips, the kiss still lingering.
"In case you didn't come back.." Zach said quietly.
"Goodbye Zach." I whispered.
I got in my front seat and started the engine. He watched me as I pulled away from the house and drove off. When I reached the sign that told me I had left Weston-Field, I sighed and shed a tear. I was nervous about how I would tell Marcus and my family. When I arrived in SeaBrook, I took a sharp breath and planned my speech. I was going to be honest and call of the engagement. And then I rolled up to Marcus's mansion. Everybody was bustling around and looked rather busy. I didn't think anything of it as I got out of the car.
I walked up the cobblestone path and in to the front door. To my surprise, Marcus was sitting in the living room across the entrance. He had a cigar with him, to my disgust. It seemed as though he had been waiting. When I shut the door, I came to his attention.
He put down the cigar and adjusted himself. He came over to where I was.
"Hello darling." He said as he kissed my cheek.
"Marcus. Hon, there's something I wanted to talk to you about." I said in a polite tone.
"Oh?" He said curiously.
"Tell me. I'm all ears." He said pulling away from me.
"Why don't we sit down?" I said smiling politely as if nothing were wrong.
"Ok." He said walking to the couch.
I sat down next to him. And stopped smiling.
"You look serious. Darling, Is everything okay?" He asked beginning to sound "worried".
I took a deep breathe.
"Marcus. Have you ever been in love before." I asked.
"I am right now." He grinned and went to put an arm around me.
I gently took his arm off me to his surprise and confusion.
"I mean real love.." I whispered.
He looked at me like he's never looked at me before. He looked understanding and sympathetic.
"What are you saying Alex?" He asked quietly.
"I'm asking if you want this. This marriage. Do you actually want it?" I asked him.
"Of course I want it." He responded as held my shoulders and smiled.
My face stayed straight.
"Marcus." I said as I stood up. "I have something to confess to you." I said as I paced slowly.
"Go ahead honey." He responded leaning back on the couch.
"When I went to Weston-Field yesterday, I was with..Zach.
Marcus's expression changed completely. His face turned pale and slightly gloomy. But he quickly recovered from it.
"Is that why this is so hard?" He asked quietly.
"Did you..fall in love with him again.?" He asked sympathetically.
My face saddened slightly and I gave him a nod.
He nodded and thought about what I was saying.
After a minute, he stood up.
"Well, Despite what has happened I still want you. I love you Alexandra." He responded taking my hand.
"But those are just empty words.." I said quietly.
"Love is something you can't break. Or bend. Or force." I said letting go of his hand.
"So..this is the end?" He asked with a hurt expression.
"I'm sorry Marcus." I whispered.
I didn't mean for it to happen this way. I meant no harm. But I caused hurt. And I couldn't fix it with a sweet smile this time. These were real emotions and I had to live with them. I made my choice.
"I hope you know that I'll never forget you Alex." Marcus said giving me a sad smile.
I just nodded my head.
"Thank you for everything." I said as a gave a small smile.
