Akaashi was walking to school one Saturday in late November. She had agreed to watch a practice game between Fukurodani and Nekoma, on the basis that her and Kenma were going into town afterwards. Since the Halloween party, she had kept her distance from Bokuto the best she could, but it was getting harder and harder to keep herself away from him.
She sat on the side of the court, watching the game, focused on the way Kenma and Kuroo kept glancing at each other. She smiled, seems that the beach party had done them some good. Guess Bokuto knew what he was doing.
As the game ended, she walked to the door to wait for Kenma. After about 15 minutes, he came out, with Kuroo. The three walked down towards the parking lot.
Kuroo bent down and kissed Kenma on the lips. "Have a good afternoon, I'll meet you back here at around 4."
Kenma blushed and waved bye. Kuroo walked back to the school. In the distance you could hear him yelling Bokuto's name. Akaashi smiled and prodded Kenma in the side.
"So... spill." Akaashi said.
"Oh, um. The morning after the beach party, when he'd dropped you two off at home, he drove around the corner, told me he'd liked me for ages, and wanted to be with me. I think it took him a little while to realised I kinda stopped working mentally after that." Kenma laughed quietly.
"Awww, I am so happy for you." Akaashi said.
They walked around shopping for a while, then stopped to get coffee and donuts, wandering to an indoor garden to sit and eat.
"Um, Kenma. I think I might need your help."
"What is it?"
"You remember that time on the bank? When I said about why Bokuto and I couldn't be together?"
"Yeah..."
"I didn't tell you everything..." Akaashi looks down, and swallows.
"Akaashi, you've been there for me through the stuff with Kuroo, you've accepted us for how we are. I knew on that evening that you didn't tell me everything, but I didn't want to push you. There have been loads of little things that I've picked up on. The way you act, the way you dress. I feel like, maybe you want to be a boy? You're trying to tell me you want to have a sex change? And if that's the case, I am totally supportive of that."
"Kenma, Iook.. " Akaashi sighs, and does something she's not done in front of anyone in years. She removes her hoodie.
"I don't understand?" Kenma said
Akaashi swept her hair off of her neck revealing an Adams apple, and Kenma gasped.
"I don't want to change into a boy.. I am one."
"Why do you pretend to be a girl?"
Akaashi frowns. "It's not my choice. My mother was desperate to have a daughter, her and my father struggled to have any child at all for a very long time. I was born very late anyway, there was no options for them to try again. I was a disappoint from the day I was born. My mother dressed me in girls clothing and pretended for as long as she could. As I got older, she found she couldn't just put me in a dress anymore. When I was 13 she started giving me tablets saying that the doctor gave them to her because I had a disease that existed in our family."
He pauses, drinks more coffee and continues.
"I was home schooled most of my life, I wasn't allowed friends. I started to question things when I got to 15, and I looked up the tablets online to find out what they do. She'd been drugging me to make me more feminine, the tablets suppress male hormones. I told her I knew, I told her I didn't want to take them anymore. That's when the threats started, and those threats turned to, well.. not threats. I just learnt to live with it. I thought if I just went along with it, eventually I might be allowed friends and to go to a real school. It worked, when she told your mum I was transferring, it was actually starting school for the first time."
"The reason I am telling you all of this, other than to explain my reasoning behind fleeing from Bokuto, is that next week it's my 18th birthday. I'm going to leave my parents house, I'm getting off the tablets, I am going to be who I was actually should have been."
Kenma sat staring at Akaashi, tears running down his face.
"Oh Akaashi, I don't even know what to say."
"Don't worry, I am just glad I was finally able to tell someone. I'm not ready to tell anyone else yet, so please keep it to yourself. Five days, and I'll be free."
