Akaashi lay on the futon on the floor of his cousins flat and stared up at the ceiling. He had told Kuroo the truth, and just as Kenma had predicted, Kuroo had been utterly fine with it.
It had been an interesting few weeks, first talks with the guidance counselor, then the principle. The police had to be involved at that point, but right now, he didn't care about that. The process and legal side of things was bound to take a while anyway. The counselor had mentioned child abuse on multiple occasions, and Akaashi now had weekly therapy sessions to attend. It didn't matter to him though, everything he had been through, he had always known who he was inside, and now he got to be that person. There was only one thing that was bothering him now.
Bokuto. How on earth was he going to tell him? He had asked Kuroo and Kenma, but neither of the other two had come up with any answers that felt right. His futon was set up on the lounge floor in the tiny one bed apartment. He got up and paced back and forth, thinking.
"For the love of god, will you go outside and run on something, you're driving me insane." His cousin called from the couch.
Akaashi sighed, put on his trainers and headed to the school gym. It had been nearly two weeks since he had stopped taking his tablets, his voice was getting deeper, it wouldn't be long now until people would realised the difference. He pulled his hood up as he entered the school grounds, dumped his stuff in the corner of the room and climbed onto a bike. Riding was something that helped him clear his head a lot.
After 30 minutes, he stopped, pulled out his earbuds to wipe off the sweat, and heard the sounds of volleyball shoes squeaking on the floor coming from the gym. He was confused, he knew the team didn't have a Setter yet, so he got off the bike and went to investigated. It only took a glance in the window to recognise the black and red of Nekoma. Akaashi walked back to the gym and text Kenma.
Akaashi was still on the bike when the door opened and Kenma walked in, followed by Kuroo. Akaashi stopped pedaling and pulled out his headphones.
"Hey Akaashi, how are you doing?" Kenma asked.
"Yeah, I'm okay. The police are still doing their investigation, I don't have to meet with them for another few days."
"We'll be here for you through it all, don't worry." Kuroo said.
"Thank you, I just don't have a clue how to tell Bokuto."
"Tell me what?"
Akaashi looked up to see Bokuto standing in the doorway, obviously having come to see where Kenma and Kuroo had disappeared to.
"Um... nothing." Akaashi mumbled.
"Just tell me. You keep flipping backwards and forwards, one minute you're my best friend, the next you ignore me and it's like I don't exist to you. I thought I could wait this out, and respect the fact you didn't want to talk, but it's killing me every day when I see you and your face is just blank. It feels like you regret ever knowing me and I can't do this anymore. You mean so much to me, I hoped you could feel you'd be able to tell me anything."
Bokuto turned away, tears forming in his eyes, Akaashi looked at the floor.
"I can't do it."
"Do you want me to just tell him?" Kuroo asked.
Akaashi silently nodded, turning away.
Kuroo walks up to Bokuto and leads him across the other side of the room. Akaashi continues to look at the floor, tears threatening to appear in his eyes. He swallowed, and then heard the door shut. He looked up, and saw Kuroo standing alone, looking towards the doorway in shock. Kuroo walked over.
"Well I told him, he didn't say anything, he just.. walked out. I can't believe this, I didn't think he would take it that badly, not after what he just said."
Akaashi felt the tears form, and buckled forward. Kenma moved forward to put an arm around his shoulders. Kuroo patted Akaashi on the back, then stopped and turned away when he heard the door open.
Akaashi looked up to see Bokuto walk across the room with a piece of paper in his hands, he thrust it in front of Akaashi. Akaashi wiped the tears from his eyes so he could read it, and realised it was the volleyball clubs flier for the Setter position. Akaashi started at it in shock, and looked up at Bokuto, who was smiling.
"Not that you need to trial, I already know you're amazing. Will you come be my Setter?" Bokuto asked.
"You're okay with this?" Akaashi asked in a small voice.
"You've always been you. The labels we are given don't define us, it's our thoughts and actions, that make us who we are, and you're the most beautiful and caring person I've ever met, inside and out."
Akaashi launched himself off of the bike and wrapped his arms around Bokuto, crying against his shoulder. Bokuto held on tightly to him.
"Plus, I prefer the shorter hair." He laughs. "Will you come play with us?"
"Yes."

It had been a few weeks since Akaashi had told Bokuto he was in fact, male. In that time he and Bokuto had walked to school together every day, gone to practice together, ate lunch together, practiced spiking together. Bokuto had come to meet him several lessons to walk him to the next one, but he never once mentioned the kiss they shared, or made any kind of acknowledgement towards having any interests in him romantically. Bokuto had said he didn't care, that he liked Akaashi for who he is, but that was as friends right?
For Akaashi, he had always known who he was, and he liked Bokuto. Bokuto hadn't changed, and as much as Akaashi wanted it to not be true, Akaashi had. Bokuto had like Akaashi the girl. Akaashi the boy was an unknown.
Akaashi vented all his feelings on the matter to Kenma, who in turn it seems told Kuroo, because within a few minutes of finishing his conversation with Kenma, a message appeared on his phone from Kuroo
18:12 Kuroo: So I was reading your conversation over Kenma's shoulder, and I decided I wanted to try and help fix your issue by throwing a house party here tomorrow night. It's a long over due house warming party, and you're not allowed to not come.
18:12 Akaashi: Fine.

Akaashi was slightly nervous when he arrived at Kuroo and Kenma's flat. He had no idea what was Kuroo was planning, but nothing Kuroo had done to interfere so far had gone that badly wrong, so maybe this was a good thing. Akaashi had taken his first opportunity to dress up without having to hide who he was, and was dressed in a dark blue fitted shirt, and black skinny jeans. It was the first time he had been able to wear anything tight fitting in public.
Hinata, Kageyama, Suga and Daichi were to one side of the room when Akaashi arrived, Suga and Daichi had Kageyama pinned up against the wall while Hinata was forcing pink hair clips into Kageyama's hair. It would seem that the rumours about the antics of their double dates were true, and that Kageyama was frequently bullied as retaliation for all the times he shouted at Hinata on the court.
Akaashi laughed to himself, and walked around the corner to the small kitchenette poked off the side of the lounge. Kuroo and Kenma were there, with two guys he didn't recognise, a fairly tall red head with the longest looking fingers that Akaashi had ever seen, and a taller dark green haired guy. The taller guy had his arm around the red head, and the red head was beaming up at the taller male. Kuroo spotted Akaashi and walked over.
"That's Tendo and Ushijima, they are from another school. We are actually looking at doing a bit of a training camp over the winter break with a five schools. I'm still talking to our teams coach about it, but it would be a good time for you to practice more with your team."
"Yeah, it would be good, it's been a bit of a steep learning curve trying to get used to how everyone likes their sets. At least I've got to grips with Bokuto's now."
"Speaking of, he should be here by now." Kuroo replied.
