Chapter One:
Jasmine
It's been a whole week since I began attending Westwood high school. A whole week I have survived. I guess it wasn't as bad as I'd assumed it was going to be. There weren't many people here, under 2,000 actually and at this school it was 8th grade to 12th instead on 9th to 12th. Each of my classes only have 15 or less students which I was glad for rather than than the normal 25 students. I had made a friend I guess you could call her. Adrianne Barks was a Junior, just like me, and we were partners in Forensics class. I sat with her at lunch so if you call that a friendship then I'm not telling you any different.
Art class is my first period. We were drawing fish, what an accomplishment, and watching Finding Nemo. Mr. Chandler was a pretty chill old-dude, he was from Ireland and had a heavy accent but he had lived here in America for nearly 30 years. He is in his fifties or sixties. He called me an artist because of my aura or something, freaked me out because on the first day he said something about knowing that I had an amazing artistic ability as soon as I walked in his room.
And there were incredible students that could draw in my class, a lot better than me too. Anyways, school was in second period right now. Here in English III we were discussing American Literature. The teacher, Ms. Hager, was a little on the dramatic side but I actually enjoyed her attitude because as long as you listened to her talk for about two-thirds of class you wouldn't have homework unless it was a project which she announced that there would only be three of including the one we would learn about today.
"A new form of English called Middle English evolved in the 12th century." Ms. Hager told the class. "Middle English lasted up until the 1470's."
"Is there anyone in here who can tell me the three main categories in that time?" the teacher asked the class.
No one budged, a few tried finding the answer by opening a textbook under the table and looking without the teacher knowing.
I knew the answer, not because I was someone who did a lot research our literature or anything but in my homeschooling my last foster parents had been pretty much obsessed with all the poets and old timing English writers back then. I probably learned more English from them than any of the other kids in this classroom had during their whole three years and a week here.
After about two minutes Ms. Hager still hadn't told us and half the kids had just been throwing out words at her in hopes they were the correct ones.
I sighed and raised my hand.
"Would you like to save us from this dry spot in here, or just ask to go to the bathroom?" the teacher asked wearily.
"Courtly love, Religious, and Arthurian." I said instead of answering her question, well I was technically answering her question.
Ms. Hager nodded in approval.
"She's right; those three subjects all began in the medieval times."
I caught something she through at me; a piece of candy. Apparently schools encourage you to answer questions by handing out free candy. I thought you weren't supposed to take candy from strangers? Stalkers and creepers usually hang out their car window waving a snickers bar while saying in their phedophilic voice 'Hey there kiddy, you want candy? It's like Halloween in here, come a little closer.....a little closer....a little---*you're taken*.' so I don't understand. People nowadays.
